Day 6 in Dragonshore (Part 2)

Atriox...

The blacksmith cracks a smile. He stands, reaches over to the sword and brings it down for the kobold. "Then may this weapon help you on that journey, my friend. May it save many lives."

Tak hesitantly takes the weapon. "T-thank you." He gives an awkward bow, glances at Atriox to see how he did, and starts to admire the blade again in more detail.

Atriox chuckles at Tak and his eagerness. He looks at the blacksmith.

"I will look for your son freind I swear. Now I have another job I'd like to propose for you. This one being a gift for a lady. I would like to explain my idea to you and see if it is doable. The job is not of urgent. You could do it at your pace as long as it gets to her."

"Oh?" Ferrar looks up at you. "A lady huh? I'm not much of a jewelsmith by trade, but... what's your idea?"

Atriox nods gratefully. "Even if you couldn't do it but could point me to somebody else that could I would gladly pay you for the information freind. I would like a wide and ornate bracelet made. In the metal I would like tropical trees and beach themes engraved in it. In the middle of the bracelet I would like there to be a ornate white jem that can hold spells."

Ferrar scratches his beard and paces a little. He looks through the material he has in the shop, contemplating your question. "I could definitely make the metalwork for something like that. The gemstone... I don't have any quite like that laying around, but perhaps a shop in town has one? Or if you find one on your adventures?"

He picks through some engraving tools he has, looking for what he'd need. "As for holding spells, I can enchant it to be susceptible to doing so. But I don't have the mastery of the weave to place any spell inside. I know a small handful... You'll have to take it to someone else who knows the spell you'd like to place, or I'll have to work with someone on it."

Atriox nods " this sounds agreeable enough. You make the bracelet and see if there is someone in town who would sell the gem. The gem needs to be white and if possible from a tropical background. I'll be leaving but once I'm back and it's done I'll find a place to get the spell. Probably Petvin."

The blacksmith smiles. "I'll see what I can do. I'll let you know when you come pick up the other armor. Does that sound agreeable?"

Atrioxs nods his head and holds his hand out to shake

"Thank you Friend!"

Ferrar smiles and heartily shakes your hand. "Any time. I'll see you soon."

Atriox leaves with his new glaive still admiring it as he notices Tak doing the same.

"Next stop we need to see our freind Petvin........brother." Atriox smiles down at Tak.

Tak finally breaks his gaze from his weapon, looking up at Atriox. "You... really meant that? That wasn't a fib like mine was to the soft skin?"

Atriox shakes his head

"No fib. Your family Tak. I know Alrik agrees, but were close to the Same species and I can make it a little more official."

The kobold nods slowly, sniffing and wiping his nose with the back of his hand. "That's very... I don't know what to say. Thank you."

You and Tak continue to make your way down the street toward the temple of Pelor, where you hope to find Petvin. Quite crowded today, the roads are clogged with shipping wagons and merchant caravans. It's definitely the close of a market day. It takes you longer than normal to get there, but once at the temple steps you spot Petvin outside, talking to a soldier.

As you approach, he concludes his conversation and the soldier leaves. Petvin looks rather frustrated. "Oh, hello again. How are things fairing, Atriox? Do you happen to have any more firebloom blossoms by chance?"

***

Alrik, you walk back into town from the east road, only a few cigarettes poorer. Spotting you, the flower merchant waves.

"Young man? You find your wallet? I heard there was a bit of a ruckus up the hill earlier..." He chuckles warmly, his face wrinkling with laughter.  "I hoped that was good news."

"I did manage to get my items returned to me... and I actually could benefit from a few bouquets of flowers. I... may have... caused some issues with a few ladies at The Fang..."

"Oooooh, I see I see..." He pats your hand, turning to grab a bag. "Romantic? Perhaps... Lilies... New start? Daffodils perhaps... Hmm, many options... what would you like?"

"Uh, nothing that says romantic... the two ladies I potentially offended are the matron of the building and a one of the ladies that my friend Atriox has already laid eyes on. Just something that says sorry."

"Aahaha, of course of course..." He pulls out several blooms. "Hyacinth." He handles them with care. "Purple, for apology... With, ah yes." He pulls out some greenery from behind the stand. "Foxfern. For sincerity." He winks, wrapping them in white paper and twine and handing them over. "One gold, for the prospect of a forgiven heart."

Alrik hands the man 2 gold pieces. "For your information earlier. Thank you again." He carefully takes the flowers and walks to the door of the Fang. He hesitantly opens the door, waiting for a guard or the matron to block his path and tell him he's no longer welcome...

As the door opens, you hear a familiar voice. "Welcome to the Velvet Fang, how may I--ALRIK!" You see a blur of blond curls and blue eyes as Zinnia grabs your arm and drags you inside, down a hallway. "Where have you been?! I heard what happened! Are you okay?" Her expression is one of concern, but bubbling over with excitement... Almost as if she finds the whole escapade thrilling.

"Heard which part...? He mutters, unsure what to do. He glances at the flowers in his arm to make sure they aren't too damaged from him grabbing them tightly as he rushed down the hall.

She lets go of you quickly. "Oh I'm sooooo sorry! I just-- I got a bit..." She bites her lip and peers down the hallway. "We're supposed to be uh, using some new... procedures. Matron Rebecca  seemed rather ornery, but I heard you blew out the back door and then broke into one of the rooms, and there was screaming, but it was all kind of... I guess I don't really know WHAT was going on, only that it... went on." Zinnia looks embarrassed.

"I have suspicions that Oxious has been dealing with the wrong sort of people... possibly even the necromancer." He sets the flowers down, pointing at them. "These are actually for Rebecca and Dahlia... I was quite rude to them earlier."

"Oooooh.... yeah.. that might be a good idea." She sounds nervous. "I dragged you over here cause I wasn't sure if she'd... approve of you uh, returning." She says the last part a little quieter. "She's in her office."

"I figured as much... I didn't necessarily mean to offend her, but at the time niceties couldn't be helped..." he passes her the letter from Magus Jaundree. "The Mage Guard is on their way... a tribunal has been called."
Her eyes grow wide. "A tribunal? Here?" She bites her lip again. "Are you going to be part of it?"

He shakes his head. "Not as a judge... I'll be a witness, though."

Zinnia nods, looking worried. "Just be careful. Sir... sorry." She gets flustered a bit. "I know I just work here, and it's my job to be nice. I've been a little informal lately. But... you're a nice guy." She glances down the hall again. "Come, let me uh... run you through the new setup here, and hopefully smooth things over with the matron."

She leads you back over to the front entryway, and motions for you to stand in the glittery circle of truth. "I just have some questions, if that's okay?"

Alrik rolls his eyes but obliges her, stepping into the circle. "This is ridiculous, I hope you know..." he chuckles.

She smiles, "I know, but the... master felt it was appropriate after the rumors flying around town. And what you said about necromancers." She shudders a little.

Zinnia clears her throat, reading from a parchment near the front desk. "Are you planning any nefarious action that could result in injury, whether physical or psychological, maiming, death or undeath of another patron or person of employ at the Velvet Fang?"

(Technically.... no. Oxious doesn't work at the Velvet Fang... he owns it. Loophole! Lolol)
(Pfttttt that's... really twisting it, but okay XD)

"No." He chuckles, a grin cracking across his face.

(Well a manager/owner of a company is still... an employee? And he does come in to work on the building........

(Well, according to Idaho law, actually... an owner is not allowed to remove any amount of money from the business's tips or wages because they are not an employee, and cannot be employed by their own business. They're paid out of profits, not wages... that's why I said loophole. Haha)

(Granted, Dragonshore isn't in Idaho... lol)
(Looooooooool..... wowwww. XD I didn't know that!)
(That's very oddly specific.... I will grant you this loophole XD Oh knower of Idahoan Law)

She nods, continuing. "Are you associated with or do you support any groups that seek the above mentioned behavior towards another patron or person of employ at the Velvet Fang?"

"Maybe? I have no idea what the rest of the military guys have in mind for their version of fun and relaxing is... mine is a bath, food, and company..." he scowls. "These questions aren't exactly helpful..." he chuckles again.

"Associated with merely by a sharing of a uniform, mind you..." he adds.

Zinnia stifles a laugh. "Right, right... I suppose you're right. Well--" At that moment the door opens to the matron's office, and Rebecca walks out. Spotting Alrik, she gives him one of the firmest stares you've ever seen from her.

Walking over to Zinnia, she pats the girl on the shoulder. "Go ahead, read the last one."

The girl glances between you both for a moment, then reads, "A-are you associated with or do you support any cults that delve into the dark arts of necromancy, torture, mutilation or other such activity for themselves, a superior influencer or a patron diety?

Alrik's face drops all traces of humor, his eyes narrowing as if having a flashback. Taking a deep breath, he answers with a shaky voice. "No. I will never support necromancy. Ever."

Zinnia looks utterly uncomfortable and honestly very sorry to have asked you that. You see her cast her eyes down rather ashamedly. The matron just smiles and nods. "That's alright. You seem to be of no harm to anyone here... you may return to your room but, sir," her voice holds a warning tone, "I expect a matured behavior from you or I will be banning you along with your compatriots from this establishment. Do I make myself clear?"

"Very much so, Matron Rebecca. I actually have something for you... they're... down the hallway." He grins slightly and walks to the room Zinnia pulled him into and grabs one of the bouquets. "I know they won't make up for me being rude, but pleace accept them as an apology."

The matron raises an eyebrow. Taking the flowers she tries hard to keep a straight and serious face. "A kind gesture... it does not change my mind or my rules, but... it is appreciated. It's not a courtesy that most who visit would extend."

"Nor would I want them to change your mind or rules. They are merely meant to be an apology for my rude behavior earlier today. In the heat of my urgency, I cast niceties aside and unfortunately you and Dahlia caught the backlash." He smiles sheepishly, clearly not very practiced at being sincere, especially with apologies.

She gives a slow nod, taking in what you've said. "I see... it is kind of you. I was rather surprised by this morning's events, as much as anyone else. I know Oxious is a secretive person, and that can cause him some... discomfort, with other people."

The matron smiles. "Regardless, it is not forgotten, but it is forgiven. Go enjoy yourself, soldier. We know you have been working hard for us... for the town. We do appreciate you."

Alrik grimaces at being called a soldier, but nods and walks toward the baths. "Zinnia, how does the house kitchen staff do with special orders? I have a recipe for citrus glazed roast duck that is to die for... when done right." He grins at her.

"I don't think it should be too much of a problem! They are quite happy cooking for you." She chuckles a little, "I didn't take you for a chef. Do you cook much, Alrik?"

(You did pay quite a lot when you first came here... outside of what was paid for your room, after all)

"I do not... but when I was stationed in the desert, I... met someone. She was a tremendous chef. It's one of her recipes..." he digs in his satchel for a minute and pulls out a handmade book, tied with hemp twine. Flipping through a couple pages, he turns the book for her to see.

Zinnia gives Alrik a curious look, peering at the page he's presenting to her. "This is marvelous... what a beautiful cookbook. You seem to take good care of it... It must be special." She smiles warmly, sensing the love in it.

"It was a gift... one that was to grace the shelf of a house... but that was before..." he clears his throat. "No matter, we can still enjoy the food found within these pages! Would your chef be up to something of this magnitude?"

"I would be delighted to find out for you. Would you like to bring it? Perhaps it would help if...?" She gets a mischievous little smile, planning to sneak you into the kitchens to speak with the head chef himself.

Alrik meets her gaze, sharing her mischievous grin. "Lead the way, Miss..."

She cracks a grin and takes your hand, sneaking you past some of the other servers and through the doors near the buffet. You see a room filled with a plethora of cookware and stoves, some pans moving about magically and others being handled by cooks directly. The smells mingle in a very interesting way here.

With a quick glance around, she spots who she's looking for. "Gregory! Chef Gregory, excuse me?"

A rather portly fellow with a grand mustache turns to face you as he whips a batch of egg white. "Yes'm?"

Zinnia glances at you and back to the chef. "This is one of our... elite customers, and he has a special request. He's wondering if you... have the capabilities to manage this dish?" She points to the book.

The chef guffaws. "I can make anything, you know me! Let me see... Duck... you want duck, sir?" He leans close to look at it, addressing Alrik.

He opens the book, showing him the recipe. "It's a very special recipe... someone close to my heart came up with it."

You see a strange spark in the chef's eye. "I see..." He straightens up. "I'd be delighted to attempt it. It looks like a very unique set of instructions... quite different than my normal preparation technique. I will make two so we can test how well this recipe turns out." His mustache twitches with a smile.

Alrik nods, gently setting the book down so he can copy the recipe. "Please have it brought to me and Zinnia when it's finished. It pairs quite well with a sparkling lime juice or a white wine. I'd like whichever you have, or both. Thank you again, chef." Alrik takes Zinnia's hand and leads her back out of the kitchen and to the baths where he again makes his way to the jasmine pool.

Zinnia is quiet for a while, joining Alrik by his gentle and rather unspoken request. She seems contemplative, which says quite a lot considering her normally bubbly and talkative demeanor.

"It's kind of you to share dinner with me again. This one seems... very, very special." She sits nearby him in the water, massaging his draconic hand and arm. Well practiced with the technique, she works around the scales in a very soothing manner. That along with the warm bath helps relieve some of your pent up stress.

"I'm sorry she's... not around anymore." Zinnia comments softly... knowingly.
Alrik looks at Zinnia with a half smile. "She's still alive, to my knowledge... her father didn't want us together, so he arranged a marriage for her to someone else... I have no idea where she is now." He swishes his free arm in the water, making small waves. "Life has different currents and undertows for each of us, and most of the time they don't lead where we thought they did... but just like this water, once the current stops making waves..." he places his right arm back up on the edge of the pool. "The water becomes calm again, after a time."

Zinnia watches the water and thinks about what you said. "I suppose that's true... it makes a lot of sense honestly." She tilts her head. "And you still have all the beautiful memories. The reflections. Right?"

Alrik smiles, nodding. "Exactly... and who knows? Maybe life will one day carry me back to her. Maybe not... I don't know, and the only person I know who does know won't tell me..." he chuckles.

She gives a half smile. "You know someone who can tell the future?"

He shrugs. "Sort of... The Enigma happens to be on a first name relationship with the Shadow God... she always would tell me she knew I was going to get hurt before I did because he told her to be ready..." he laughs, thinking back. "I remember one time I limped into her medical area, and she had a bed, splint, needle and thread waiting, as well as a heavy painkiller potion and enough bandages to wrap up a War Rhino..."

Zinnia laughs, "Why that's mighty fine information to have. Good for a healer to be ready for her charges before they even know..." She leans back, glancing at your scars. "Granted, knowing before you get injured and how to avoid it in the first place sounds better to me."

Alrik nods. "True, but sometimes injury shapes us to be someone better than we were before..."

Zinnia wraps her arms around you and relaxes. "You feel like you've grown a lot from these scars, then? I can tell you even have some newer ones..." She touches the skeletal claw marks on your cheek, now healing well.

Alrik turns his head to look her in the eye. "Yes, my injuries and scars have shaped me into who I am today... were it not for this scar..." he rubs the back of his neck. "I probably never would have joined the military... never been part of the Mage Guard... never met Makani, Atriox, or yourself... if not for this scar, I would probably be a farmer..." he chuckles, trying to push aside the painful and haunting memories associated with that particular scar.

Her expression softens. "I'm glad you were able to have all those happy experiences bloom from that pain. Scars may not heal completely, but they do fade."

She gives Alrik a kiss on the cheek. "Anyway, I'm going to see about that dinner you ordered. I'll be back shortly... Can I grab you anything else?"

Alrik shakes his head. "No, I'm just going to relax a bit longer before I head to my room... thank you, though."

Zinnia pets the top of Alrik's head as she leaves, and you see her head to the kitchens. It's finally a peaceful evening. The enchanted ceiling overhead glitters with the early evening stars, a reddish tent to the galaxies coming into view.

You spot more soldiers here than you usually see, many sitting with healers and other servers. The tang of healing salve and other remedies, which you've been quite familiar with during your stent in the military, cuts through the air despite the floral bathwater.

Zinnia returns, a huge smile on her face. She looks close to bursting with excitement. "The head chef wants to tell you they've finished the dishes, and he's thrilled with the taste. He wanted to ask if you would allow them to serve it here... as a main dish. He'll happily pay you 50 gold for the use of the recipe, if that's alright?"

Alrik smiles. "She always wanted her recipes shared with the world..." he nods.

Zinnia gives him a kiss. "Shall I bring your food out to the dining area? Or would you like to eat in your room again tonight?"

"I'll dine in my room again. Too many people in the dining area..." he stands up and begins drying off

Zinnia nods. "I'll bring it up to you right away."

You head upstairs, passing a few groups of people on the way. It does seem strangely crowded tonight. You overhear snippets about Oxious on the way; people debating his involvement with the recent events in town. You also hear about Magnolia's disappearance, and the trouble you've caused as well. There's mixed information about the kobolds, the blacksmith, and the orcs, but all in all you hear your rumors making the rounds.

A few minutes after arriving in your room, you find Zinnia at your door with a tray. The smells of citrus and duck fat waft in and stimulate an avalanche of memories. The girl sets it on your table with a smile and a wink. "And sparkling lime juice and white wine, as requested?"

Alrik smiles as the memories wash over him, Zinnia's voice snapping him back to reality. "Ah, yes. Wonderfully delicious meal. It smells just like I remember it. Please..." he gestures to the chair next to him, pouring a 50/50 mix of white wine and sparking lime juice.

Zinnia sits down with a smile, placing a little pouch of money nearby for you. "I haven't seen the chef this happy in years. I think it will be one of our top favorites here."

"It is a special recipe, that's for sure..." he smiles, taking a sip of his drink

She chuckles, delicately cutting the dinner and plating it for him. "I can tell... How was your day, today, Alrik? Anything exciting?"

"Well," she laughs, "Anything other than what happened here with Oxious, I mean. I do miss Magnolia though... We used to talk a lot. I hope she's back soon."

"I fell asleep on a bench outside... had some kids steal my identification papers, wallet, and a few other things..." he looks out the window as if attempting to peer the distance to the orphanage. "Got it all back, though..."

She looks shocked. "R-really? Oh my goodness, you poor thing! Just one thing after another... Kids can be rather mischievous."

Alrik takes a bite of his duck, grinning as the flavor. "Well, hopefully I straightened them up... scared the absolute daylights out of them..." he chuckles, looking at his nearby uniform. "Much like The Inferno did when I was younger and in an orphanage..."

"You grew up in an orphanage too?" Zinnia tries a bite of food and practically melts at the taste. She forgets what she was asking for a minute.

"When did you meet The Inferno? Were you still quite young?"

Alrik smirks. "Which time? I made a few different impressions on him... the first time I was around... ten? Eleven, maybe? He found me by the river fishing... with... magic."

Zinnia looks excited to hear about it. "How did you do it? Was he impressed?"

"I'd shock the water and kill the fish... only a few of them, though." He chuckles

Zinnia laughs, "Well that's a clever way to do it. Magic sounds like it makes everything easier."

***

You and Tak continue to make your way down the street toward the temple of Pelor, where you hope to find Petvin. Quite crowded today, the roads are clogged with shipping wagons and merchant caravans. It's definitely the close of a market day. It takes you longer than normal to get there, but once at the temple steps you spot Petvin outside, talking to a soldier.

As you approach, he concludes his conversation and the soldier leaves. Petvin looks rather frustrated. "Oh, hello again. How are things fairing, Atriox? Do you happen to have any more firebloom blossoms by chance?"

Atriox looks a Petvin seriously.

"I'm afraid not freind why ? More troubling news from the front ?"

Atriox looks the way the soldier left.

The priest sighs. "I'm afraid so. There was an accident that took out a patrol group. Lots of injured coming in, that was the messenger ahead of the group."

He picks at his teeth. "I'm... also missing part of a shipment I ordered. Medical supplies. I can't imagine we ran through it all so fast... Maybe we did, but..." he hesitates.

Atriox looks back to Petvin.

"Do you suspect some sort of foul play freind ?"

"...Maybe." He scratches his head. "But perhaps I just don't... Uh... Remember." He looks a bit flustered again, coughing awkwardly. "I mean, only the priests and healers have access. I'm probably just misplaced them."

He glances up at you. "If you happen to find more blossoms I'll pay you extra."

Atriox nods his head. "Of course freind we will look if we can. By any chance have you seen the blacksmiths boy ?"

"Leonar Axemage? I can't say that I have recently... Is he missing?"

"I don't know if missing is the right word........him and his da got in a argument of sorts and hasn't seen him since. Asked me if I'd look around is all."

"Oh. Good, good... Don't need any more trouble here. He's a good kid. If I see him I'll let you and Ferrar know."

"Thank you Petvin I'd greatly appreciate it. Now on to other matters. I'm having a gift made by the blacksmith but I want it to have a spell of protection on it. I was wondering if you could do anything about that?"

"A protection spell you say?" He considers the question, a slight smile hiding in his beard. "Well Wilster does provide temporary enchantments, but it sounds like you want something more permanent?"

Atriox looks at Petvin with a smile.

"Indeed I do. Just some extra security for someone."

The priest sighs. "I'm afraid so. There was an accident that took out a patrol group. Lots of injured coming in, that was the messenger ahead of the group."

"Well..." he ponders, "follow me if you would." Heading inside, he takes you down one of the side hallways, past his office and into a small sanctum. Books and scrolls are stored along a honeycombed wall, decorated with holy imagery.

"I can work with my hands, and Pelor can suplicate my connection with the weave to aid others. There is a draw on the spirit with such things though, and I can only do so much."

"Long term spells require a charging ritual, and are quite expensive. The more powerful the spell, the greater the cost. Let's see though... I have..."

He pulls out a set of inventory papers, scanning the list.

"Protection from evil... Very good. Sanctuary, a popular one. Shield of Faith... Are you a religious person, Atriox?"

Atriox smirks. "My parents always taught me to follow Io. The Dragon Father. But I'm not devout. I can't even remember the last time I prayed or gave thanks."

Petvin nods, "Quite alright, my boy. I am not wholly familiar with Io, but Pelor is a gentle strength to me. I've saved many lives with his guiding hand. It may do you well in these dark times to turn to your diety's old teachings, do things to please him... I believe he was the god of balance, was he not? Father of the feuding Bahamut and Tiamat?"

Atriox gives a small nod. "Indeed he was. Was being the key word. He perished a long time ago."

"Aah, I see..." He bows his head in reverence. "His essence still lives on in his children I'm sure... and in your kind. So, never truly dead, I suppose?" He smiles wisely and pats your hand.

Rifling through some more paperwork he exclaims, "Oh, I can order more powerful spells from my order. Protection from flame, or other elements... Spirit guardians... wards against death... They just get a little more costly, is all. Let me know what you are interested in and I can inquire."

Atriox ponders the many options. "A ward against death sounds like the most effective no ?"

He nods slowly. "It does not deflect or protect from injury, but rather, holds on to the last drop of life should one take a fatal injury. If another strike falls though, death is still certain."

Atriox ponders some more.  "Let's do the sanctuary spell shall we. I want it to be a permanent spell on this bracelet."

"That sounds perfect. A permanency spell for Sanctuary would cost about 200 gold, and I'd need the item to attach it to. And... probably a good few hours with the item in question."

Atriox claps the dwarf on the shoulder. "Very well. I will bring you the item when it is finished. I will also look for some more firebloom  while we are out. Now on to the last matter of business. Did you talk to the Mayor about additional funds as you said you would?"

"Oh! That's right, that's right." He wags his finger, as if he'd completely forgotten. "My mind has been on so many things..." He leads you back out and to his office, withdrawing a parcel from his drawer. "Mayor Cere indicated much of the treasury is tied up with some shipping business as well as this war with the evils assailing Stonebreak Keep. But he did appreciate your assistance and wanted to help, and provided this. It's not much, but..."

The dwarf hands you the parcel, and inside is a short thank you note along with a pack of 80 gold pieces.

Atriox weighs the bag in his hands rolling his eyes.

"Thank you Petvin your help is very appreciated in all things. Now I need to go see  the mayor in question."

"I see, he'll probably be leaving town hall soon. You might be able to catch him if you hurry?"

Atriox nods "thanks for everything Petvin! Let's go Tak!"

Atriox takes of running torwards the courthouse.

Tak runs after you, trying to keep his cloak and hood up and his sword under it the best it can. It kind of drags in the dirt behind him at times, bumping against the ground as he steps.

You make it to the courthouse as a bell sounds from the temple. People are already filing out, but you push past them and head inside. It's a very clean building with simple unadorned decor. One fellow stops you, a soldier in more business style attire. "Good afternoon, in quite the rush I see! Here for any specific business?"

Atriox flushes a little embarrassed. He straightens himself.

"My name is Prince Atriox and I'm here to see the Mayor. I need to discuss some things with him before me and my men leave tomorrow to scout the Kobolds position in the forest."

"Oh, I see! He did mention something about that. Let me take you to him." The soldier smiles and leads you to one of the rooms, knocking on the door. A familiar, gruff sort of voice responds. "Come in, yes, what is it?"

"Excuse me sir, Prince Atriox is here to speak with you about the--" He glances down, noticing Tak hovering in your shadow. "The uh... kobold situation?"

You can here Cere pause, almost sighing into his beard. "Yes, of course. Come in, Atriox. I have a minute." He forces a smile. "What can I do for you?"

Atriox looks to Tak "mind the door outside my brother I'll only be a few minutes."

He turns to the Mayor as the door shuts. "Thank you for taking the time to see me sir it is much appreciated. As you know we are leaving tomorrow to scout out the kobolds. We plan on using a cave near the temple as our base of operations. We will spy on the camp for awhile and assess the situation. Once we have we already have several work in progress plans that we could use. One of witch requires alchohol as a gift/trap for the kobolds. I would like you to requisition some of this town's strongest barrels of brew. It could greatly help us."

Atriox walks around the room.

"My goal is to get some of the kobolds if not most of them on our side. It would greatly help our situation and deplete this dragons forces. A dragon is a fearsome enough opponent. The last thing we need is for it to have troops."

He looks at the mayor seriously. "If I was also able to gain the help of these Kobolds it could help us defeat these orcs that are working for the necromancer."

Atriox gives the mayor a worried look. "This Is our best chance sir"
(Persuasion 17)

Cere leans back in his chair, stroking his beard. He looks interested now rather than irritated. "Alcohol? That's quite an interesting proposition. I believe I left some funding with Petvin for you, I thought he might see you before I did. I am a busy man after all." He stands, grabbing his hat. "You can use that money to get several barrels from the Dragon's Lair Inn."

Atriox nods his head as if this was the answer he expected although he's secretly enraged at the dwarf.

"I in fact do have what you gave Petvin. I was just hoping you could assist me in getting a few extra barrels. There are after all a good amount of Kobolds and I will need the strongest stuff to impress, and later knock them out. But I suppose if that is your position I'll just have to try and get enough with what I have here. Good day."
(Persuasion 18 lol)

Atriox turns his back on the dwarf and heads for the door.

The dwarf watches you intently. He suddenly calls out for you, "Actually... Uh... You know what, that sounds doable Atriox. Let me pull some strings.  I'm more than happy to assist you. We heroes must support each other, after all."

He flashes another smile. "I'll send word to Jennae Applebrew and see what they have in stock at the Lair. We'll make preparations for a wagon and horse, too."

Atriox stops and looks at the dwarf with a smile. He walks over to the man and holds his hand out to shake

" I genuinely appreciate it Sir. One hero to another. I will make sure your help is noted should this all go according to plan. I do admire you Cere, truly. I think you've done good on this town. Tell Miss Applebrew I'll be by early in the morning to get the wagon and we will leave for our mission."

Before Atriox goes he hands the coin to the Mayor.  "Give this to the lady. I know it probably won't pay for everything but it should help some." Atriox leaves.

His eyebrows shoot up and are lost in his hat. "O-oh. Of course, Atriox. It will be ready at dawn."

Tak jumps a bit as he sees you exit. "Everything go well?"

Atriox looks a Tak with a big grin "indeed it did little one indeed it did. Just another step in the game that is politics. Say how would you feel about hunting some Goblins?"

He blanches a little, then gives a hurried grin. "Oh! Y-yes. That would be... Uh... Tak excited. When are we...?"

Atriox looks at him closely. "Within the next two days we will hunt them down to the last. Are you ok ? You seem.......odd is there something you want to talk about with me brother ?"

(14 Persuasion bahhh)

Tak licks his lips. There's an odd gleam in his eyes. "I want to kill more of them... Yes." The kobold seems to fidget with the handle of his new sword.

The two of you leave the town hall, walking back in the fading sunlight. Tak is quiet for some time, staring at the hills out to the east where the edge of the forest is.

After some time, he mumbles in his best attempt at common. "Tak... lost some of the javelins Atriox gave him."  (Make an insight check)

(16+2 wanting to head torwards Oxious house btw)
(Oh, okay! Sounds good.)

You can tell Tak is being partially truthful... At least sincere. You do remember seeing more javelins in the room before, and now that you think about it, you hadn't seen any today.

As they walk torwards Oxious house Atriox is very curious

"Tak you know you can tell me anything right ? Were family now. If there is something bugging you or something from your past that makes you hate these Goblins I'd like to know if that was alright with you."
(17 Persuasion)

He fiddles with his claws, sharpening them against the edge of his blade. He starts talking in draconic, quietly but with purpose. "I don't like being at the place. The Fang. Too many people. Not real. Got drug once." His scaly brow furrows. "Not nice."

"Tak been out once... or twice. At night." He glances up at you, his yellow eye almost blank from emotion. "Tracking goblins. Hunting goblins. They desecrate my home. They... desecrate the bones. Adult, hatchling, egg, they not care. They think it funny."

He blinks, pulling out a piece of twine. It's threaded through easily twenty severed tongues.

"They not laughing now."

Atriox stops and bends down to look at Tak and his trophies. His eyes wide and Astonished.

"You........killed......all of these on your own ? While we were asleep?"

Atriox pauses in shock. "I'm truly impressed Tak. This is a good trophy you got going here........you said kobolds follow the strong right ?"

Tak's cheek twitches with a little pride. "While you were asleep. While they were asleep. They not wake anymore from the nightmares I give them. But I do it for my people... not to lead the others." He looks away. "But Tak will gladly kill more. And will gladly do what you ask of him. Want to take good care of his... brother."

Atriox is a little surprised but then smiles and gives Tak a one armed embrace.

"I know you dont do it for power and I respect that I truly do. But we need those kobolds on our side. If we kill all of the goblins, get you more trophies and the head of the chief goblin I'm thinking they might follow you. Or at least some of them."

He gives a little nod. "Alright. I... was worried you might be mad, about me sneaking out. I'm glad what I did helps you too. Tak wants to help."

Atriox nods understanding. "You do help. All the time. In ways you dont always understand. Now let's go get our men from Oxious shall we ?"

Tak smiles. "Sounds like a good plan." He stashes his loot again and follows quickly after you.

You arrive at Oxious' house, a fair looking home with magelights hanging outside in a garden of strange plants.

Atrioxs knocks on the door
(Make a.... wisdom saving throw)
(16.... XD That works. 14 for Tak.)

A glittering pattern appears on the door, the glyph taking the form of a pair of horns. You're blasted back with a wave of energy, a prickling sensation crawling over your scaly skin. It's as if for a brief second you were paralyzed and unable to move, but the feeling passes almost instantly.

The door blasts open with a bang, and you see a furious looking minotaur standing in the frame. Once he spots you his face changes instantly to a toothy grin. "Atriox!" He stomps out, grabbing you in a bonecrushing hug.
Atriox struggles to breath as several things in his body pop.

 "hi..........Tank....." He weazes.

"Good seein' you. Tiny men inside. Rather grumpy. How is Zeed?" He leads you in.

Atriox follows after Tank. "Zeed is doing good. Had an easy last day. Hows everything going here ?"

"Good." He smiles. He doesn't think to say more than that. He leads you into the main area of the house.

The room is a very lush parlor, full of decor rather akin to the Velvet Fang. You see burgundy curtains with gold tassels, matching carpets, elven-crafted couches and chairs, and a fireplace burning with a strangely pink glow. Trinkets, some whistling and spinning, others hovering and bobbing, sit along a wall of magical artifacts.

Near the window you spot Olohand, holding a book and looking at you in great surprise. Covering the table and some of the floor are his books and parchment, obviously in the middle of being researched. He gives a wave. "Hello! So nice to see you! We're making quite the research team."

Oxious walks in with a cup of tea. Spotting you he closes his eyes. "Oh dear gods." He turns on heel and immediately walks back out.

Atriox chuckles "Oxious my old freind come backkkkk!" He runs after Oxious playfully

A wall materializes in front of you making the doorway disappear.

Atriox looks at the wall up and down. He grins and braces himself for a headache. He charges into the door head first.

You stumble right through the invisible wall and spot Oxious down near the end of the hallway. Fancy paintings line the walls, many of which are framed in brass. He turns and sees you again. "Noooo.....!" He walks at a brisk pace, agitated. "Go talk to the old man and get him out of my house! I have too many house guests!"

Atriox grunts "Oxiousssss why are you being like this ? It's not like I'm the one that threw lightning at you. I defended your Billy goat ass ."

"Excuse me!? You can kiss my billy goat ass! Came charging right in with that bird brain and electric bastard... Freaking set me up! I just want peace, ugh!"  He materializes his wand and there's a pop. He chucks a bag at you, about 20 platinum pieces spilling out on the floor.

Atriox goes sprawling from the force. He gets up and looks at the coin seeing if it's real (insight 17)

"Your right I came charging in with him but I apologized then and I still apologize for it now. But when your partner and freind yells for you urgently it's kinda the right thing to do by backing him up" (Persuasion 19)

"I am sorry Oxious. Truly."

You're positive the platinums aren't real, and Oxious doesn't seem like the kind of fellow to actually throw his money around.

"Well ya didn't back him up long, did ya big guy?" He turns around, arms spread out. He continues to walk backwards as he talks. "I believe you're sorry, because this is a game of chess and I'm a move ahead of you. Why are you SO keen on helping ME? Come on, I know a hustle when I see it, Atriox. I am the KING of hustle in this town!"

Atriox has a look of confusion and annoyance. He struggles to get up.

"Big guy ??? Watch it old man. And Hustle? I'm not here for anything but two of my own men you jackal ! I followed you this far because I was trying to have fun and apologize one last time. Not for gain you goat. Now I'm rethinking that damn apology."

Oxious puts a hand on his hip and glares at you, downing his tea in one go. He exhales heavily then shakes his head. "Fine... Fine. Whatever you say."

Rubbing his brow he walks back toward you. "I'm just... a bit on edge and not used to so many guests here. I like privacy. If you're taking two men with you that would be pleasing." He gives you a look that you assume to be apologetic.

Atriox mumbles a little bit. "Yes I'll be taking Tank and Bitey with me. Nathaniel and yourself should be enough to protect Olohand. I'm hoping all goes to plan. But it probably won't. I'll be getting my men and leaving."

Oxious raises an eyebrow. "I see. Yes... Always have a contingency."

Walking past you to finally enter the room with Olohand, he points up. "Also, your uh, "Bitey" friend is on my roof keeping a look out. I must say you've picked quite an interesting band of misfits for your work."

Tak watches the spinning machines twirl and bob on the shelf, all the while glancing over at Olohand. He remembered seeing the man at the speech, but it was different seeing him here, working.

7:42 AM

Atriox grunts in agreement. "We have several plans in reserve. I just hope its enough is all."

He looks at Tank  "Tank would you please go get Bitey for me ? You and him will be coming with me. Where is Nathaniel?"

Tank looks contemplative, which is a funny look for him. "Out back. I think. He doing walk around house."

Atriox nods his thanks and goes to find Nathaniel.

Tank grins. "I go get Bitey. BITEYYYY!" He bellows as he walks outside, the sound of his voice ringing in your ears.

Oxious grimaces. "Oh gods, please. Take them soon. It's been like this sense you left them."

You walk out back, most of the yard decorated like the front. You hear a snoring sound coming from a bench, and find your merc fast asleep, an empty bottle of booze in hand.

Atriox looks at the scene. Not very happy about what he is seeing at all. He quickly grabs the bottle with one hand and picks Nathaniel up in the other holding him at eye level
(Strength 22)

"Give me one good reason I shouldn't break this bottle over your head ?!!"
Theres a growl in his voice

His eyes snap open, scrambling to get his feet back under him. "BOSS! Uh, it's--I was just, heh, uh--taking a little break is all ya see?" He licks his lips nervously, eyeing the bottle in your hand.  (12 persuasion)

"I was up all night keepin' watch, heh, i-it was Bitey's turn today!" (17 deception)

Atriox grunts blowing some steam. "Very well........but I'm taking Bitey and Tank with me on a mission. You will stay with Olohand and guard him. Understood? And Nathaniel I better never see you like this again while on a job. You want rest find q proper place and not with a bottle in your hand. Save that for after the job. And one last thing."

Atriox hands him 8 gold. "Do a good job Nathaniel and there will be more."

He takes the gold and stuffs it in his pocket. "Y-yes boss, heh, understood. I won't let the old man out of my sight. You can trust me, heh."

Atriox heads back inside to get Tank and Bitey.

You see Tank and Bitey waiting for you, the latter smiling slowly. Tank snorts. "What we doin' boss? Stuff tonight?"

Atriox smiles at there enthusiasm. "Tonight we need to find Zeed. I sent him to watch Alrik so we will check at the Fang first. Once that's done we rest up, for tomorrow we leave to spy on the kobolds. The first step to get the kobolds to like us is destroy one of there natural enemies. Tomorrow we will be wiping out the Goblins in  Tanglewood Grove."

They both grin now. Tank chortles, punching his hand into his fist. "My kind of fun!"

"Come let us away I wish to get some rest tonight before we leave tomorrow. I will check in with you upon our return Olohand. Good luck !"

Atriox leaves with Tak and his men heading for the fang.

On your way back you catch sight of someone heading toward the same direction. It's Zeed, who's looking rather perplexed at the moment. He doesn't seem to notice your group right away, but is staring at a paper he's carrying.

Atriox smiles at the sight of him. He looks at the other men "well that was easier than I thought "

Looking at Zeed again he shouts " Zeed ! Come here man we where just looking for you !"

Zeed jumps a little. "Guys! Hey, glad to see ya!" He wanders over, greeting Bitey and Tank with a hand shake and shoulder bump. "Hope the old man is well. How's things looking, boss?"

Atriox Pat's Zeed on the shoulder. "Good very good. I have gotten the supplies we need from the town for our job tomorrow. There will be a wagon and horse waiting for outside the inn at dawn. Once we have it Tak here is going to leads us to a cave where we will make camp and spie on the kobolds. From there we will also launch our attack on the goblins in Tanglewood Grove."

"Well, uh..." Zeed gives a sheepish chuckle. "I have this, if it helps."

He hands you the paper he was looking it earlier. It's a detailed view of a goblin encampment from above, the one you're likely to be attacking in Tanglewood.

(Niceeeeee new plan kill goblins take their camp)
(Bwahaha... You could 🤣
(Mostly ramshackle and tents, but it's definitely a good spot
(Siiiiiii)
(I would say the goblins are at the red dot, outside of the Grove, and the cave is at the yellow dot. Kobolds are at the temple, #4.)

Atriox takes the map looking very impressed.

"Did you draw this Zeed ? It's very well done! We must get this to Alrik itll help us make a plan of attack come freinds."

"Actually, uh," he looks a bit confused. "Alrik and I got pickpocketed earlier. We split up to look for our stuff. He had me scout out the docks. Said some fishy fella was walking around with a weird chest."

He scratches his head. "I found the guy but he was just a crazy old merchant. He said I might need this and handed it over. Didn't charge me or nothing. I didn't even know why I'd need it. But... I guess he knew?"

"Hmmmm interesting indeed.......... well we have it now. Let's get to the fang once there u guys may do as you wish till dawn. Me and Alrik need to speak and it may get heated."

They chuckle and start to head off toward the brothel. You can hear Zeed admonishing the others to behave, and explaining the new rules there. Tak kind of hangs back behind you, walking slowly.

"Atriox?" He hesitates, watching the others get a little further ahead. "Can I ask something?"

Atriox looks at Tak "sure what's up brother ?"

The kobold seems to take a moment to gather his thoughts. "You fight lots. You have many enemies. But some you spare." He rubs at his eye, itchy from the healing scars you gave him. "You fought Zeed, spared him. But others you kill. What makes you choose? How you choose to kill or spare?"

Atriox is surprised at this question. He bends down to Taks level.

"That's a very important question little one. I'm glad you asked it. In the few moments between life and death a lot can happen. I do kill alot of my foes but your also right I've spared as many to. How do I choose who to spare ? There are many answers to that question."

Atriox ponders how to word this exactly. He puts his hands on Taks shoulders

" in truth I spared you because I thought you could be useful. I still do. But as you know you have grown on me and Alrik and are family now. Sometimes in cases like Zeed and his boys I chose mercy because I saw that there was more to them.......that given the right chance they could become more. So you see Tak it's very situational. You need to ask yourself should I spare this person ? Does them living benefit me in anyway ? If they live could they become something more.....something better ? Does this help you little one ?"

"I... think so." He looks more troubled, but nods. "Could they become something better.... can they be useful to me." He looks up at you, his yellow eyes unblinking. "Tak thanks you for your wisdom."

Atriox holds on to him. "Is something else the matter little one ? What's on your mind?"

He shrinks a little under your gaze. "What if... person hurt your family? What if your family die from it? Even if person is useful, what would Atriox do? Does protection outweigh usefulness?"

Atriox thinks hard on this...........He finally looks at Tak. Some emotions are clearly on Atrioxs face.

"I.........I dont know Tak. I have yet to find the people that killed my family and destroyed my home........I don't know how I'd feel with my blade at there neck........there life in my hands."

He looks down taking a few deep breaths. "Is this about the goblins Tak ?"

"...Yes." He turns his face away, licking his lips. "Tak has many enemies."

Atriox watches him closely. "In what way could the goblins be useful?"

The kobold hesitates. He thinks about what you've said already, his eyes looking sidelong at you. He gets a little bit of a smirk. "Trophies."

Atriox chuckles " they'd be dead though and you'd have your trophies so how does the goblin come into our conversation of spare or kill ?"

His brow furrows. (Make an insight check)

(22....) "They're useful because they squeal... tell information." Tak is having a hard time hiding it. He's obviously talking about something more than the goblins, as he's had no qualms about killing them.

Atriox grunts at is  holding back.

"Tak you know your my brother and I care about you but you better start squealing too......." Atriox gives a sly grin.

(12) His brow shoots back up, glancing at your large, dragonborn claws on his shoulder. "Ah! Ah, it's not--" Tak gulps. "--I just--ok, fine, it's not just the goblins, I... still hate all these soldiers." He winces. "Every time I see them I just want to..." He growls out a little whine, his grip tightening painfully on his sword hilt.

"When those conniving blue kobolds came, we were their meat shield. We did bad things. Many bad things." He winces. "Maybe we deserved it. Deserved our home being..." He trails off, growling a little. "I know -I- deserved it! But... but she didn't. I couldn't save my nest mate. My family. All I can see is blood when I look at the soldiers." His eyes glow in the moonlight.

Atriox smiles sadly. "I know little I know" he gives Tak a small hug.

"I wish I could let you kill them. But I cant we need this town Tak. There are so many bigger things on the horizon. I know it's hard to see. All I can give you is the promise that someday you will be above all these people and soldiers. In certain situations maybe even in charge of them. Remember you are the one who will unite Kobolds and human together."
(Persuasion 15)

He looks up at you with renewed hope and nods. "Y-yes, Atriox. You're right... I'm sure you're right. And you're a good... a good brother." A fierce gleam flashes through his gaze. "I will do what I need to to protect you. You're the only family I have left now."

"When can you teach me the sword, brother?"

Atriox gives him a smile       "maybe we can start tonight. Alrik might be asleep by the time we get to the fang. Come."

Tak nods and hurries after you with a renewed spring in his step.
When you enter the Fang, the others are already inside at the bar having a drink. A human woman with a long braid of red hair stops you near the door. "Welcome back sirs, hope you are having a beautiful evening."

She smiles warmly. "We have a new policy today. Please, may I ask you a few questions before you enter?"

You feel an energy coming from the floor and the very air around you. A glittering glyph sparkles at your feet. You feel you wouldn't be able to lie while in this area.

Atriox chuckles "ahhhhh Oxiouss new truth circle. Very well go on."

"Are you planning any nefarious action that could result in injury, whether physical or psychological, maiming, death or undeath of another patron or person of employ at the Velvet Fang?"

Tak looks at Atriox and back to the lady nervously. He shakes his head no.

"Nope sure ain't. May we pass now and go to our rooms ?"

She gives a soft laugh. "Not quite yet. Two more questions. Are you associated with or do you support any groups that seek the above mentioned behavior towards another patron or person of employ at the Velvet Fang?"

Tak looks confused. He shakes his head no again. He knows some common tongue, but the questions are a little over his head. The words are rather big for him.

Atriox shakes his head rather annoyed.

"Are you associated with or do you support any cults that delve into the dark arts of necromancy, torture, mutilation or other such activity for themselves, a superior influencer or a patron diety?"

"No mam now may I go to my room ?"

Tak shakes his head no as well, tilting it sideways as he looks at her.
The girl smiles. "Yes, that's fine dears. You may enter now, thank you for your patience."

Atriox smiles as well at her "sorry if I was rude. It's been a long day. Will you send Dahlia to find me in the baths ?

She winks at you. "As you wish, sir. I'll have her come find you as soon as she's available."

Tak looks up at Atriox and hurries off for a moment. He ends up following you to your room with armfuls of food and drinks.

Atriox chuckles "I assume some of that is for me ?"

Tak nods at you with a turkey leg in his mouth.

Meanwhile,  Zinnia takes another bite of food. "I'm glad you were accepted into the Mage Guard, Alrik. I'm sure many lives were saved because of you. And likely, many more." She beams.

Alrik nods slowly. "I'm glad I joined the Mage Guard as well... however I'm not too sure I did it to save others so much as to change my own life."

"That's admirable too though, I must say." She smiles at you.

"Perhaps that's true..." he scratches his beard absentmindedly. About that time Alrik hears the heavy footfalls and the usual accompanying skittering of Atriox and Tak.

Alrik sighs, looking at his finished plate. "I really should go talk with them... explain what has happened the last few days."

Zinnia nods. "That's alright sweetie. I'll clean up. I'm glad to have shared a meal with you. You're a good man." She gives him a kiss. "I'm sure they'll understand."

Atriox eats some food and a drink or two. After hes done he thinks Tak and goes to find Alrik before heading to the baths

Tak drinks several bottles of firewiskey, usually taking drinks when you're not watching. A glazed look comes over his face and he nods a bit. "Tak... go sit in main room. Watch people. Listen music, get food. Wait for bath."

Zinnia opens the door to exit with the trays and empty glassware. She sees Atriox standing on the other side. "Hi! Um, Alrik is inside, if you'd like to speak with him?" She smiles warmly before she leaves. "We appreciate all you guys have done for us."

Atriox nods at her with a smile "it's our honor mam. I need to speak with Alrik so if you'll excuse me mam."

Atriox enters the room looking Alrik "I suppose we need to talk......"

Alrik nods, an expressionless face betrayed by a flash of spark in his eyes. "It would seem that way, wouldn't it..." he gestures to a chair, inviting Atriox in to join him

Atriox nods very stiffly and takes the chair

"You want to go first and get it off your chest ?"

Alrik shrugs. "May as well..." he explains what he saw in the basement, including the matching ring, the spectral mage hand, and the runed gloves. "When I questioned Oxious about that strange symbol... I didn't quite believe his answers. Somehow he's bypassing the Zone of Truth spell, although it wouldn't necessarily be difficult for him as he's the one who etched it..."

Alrik polishes off the bottle of sparkling lime juice before continuing. "And when I came through that dimensional door... not only did he draw a wand on me, but he invoked the name of the Lord of Lies... I'm not sure if you know the history of tieflings, but most hate The Archfiend... they wouldn't let his name touch their tongue, much less invoke it in such a manner..."

Atriox listens to the half humans story calmly. Finally holding all the facts he somewhat understands the mans stance on the matter.

Atriox let's out a deep sigh and rubs his eyes from being tired and stressed.

" I understand mostly why you did what you did Alrik. But you have to understand why I did what I did. You attacked an influential man of this town before he even struck at you. Yes he pulled a wand, but would you not do the same when someone barged through your magical portal unannounced ? A portal that no one is supposed to know about no less."

Atriox looks at the man very sternly

"I was not willing to go to prison over your anger. An anger that I'll remind you stopped you from hearing my warning to control yourself, stopped you from hearing the womans testimony that she was perfectly fine. Also I remind you that Oxious disarmed as soon as I told him to. I did not intend to betray you. I followed you in there for gods sakes but you were out of control."

"A portal that has no need existing if he had nothing to hide... as for his influence on this town, to hell with it. I care nothing for him or what he can do. I struck him before I have him the opportunity to strike me. My time on the streets as a bastard orphan, and my time in the military taught me many times over that sometimes you don't get a chance to strike back. Sometimes you have to hit first and hit hard..." Alrik looks at Atriox, a stern, seasoned expression on it. "Magnolia may have said she was fine, but her sobs, tears, and face said otherwise. Those gloves... the magic etched into them... it is painful in a way you cannot even fathom. It's like someone is ripping your memories from your head and then shoving them back in. The Mage Guard has had many, many debates about completely outlawing such spells... as it is, the use of it is restricted..."

He stands up and walks to the window, looking at his reflection in the glass, his eyes flickering. "While you are correct I lost my temper, I was in control... if I weren't... this conversation wouldn't be happening. When a mage legitimately loses control, the very essence of magic, the weave of reality, devours him... it... destroys everything nearby..."

Atriox laughs for a good few seconds.

"You are just bond to be angry at him Alrik no matter what. If I had the ability to make portals I'd have one to. Why walk across town from your business to your home when you can blink between the two like nothing ? I certainly would like to have some in Skyhold if I get it back.......as for the magic......fine that may be a fair point but still Alrik you acted very rashly. You were in the army. You should also have mor discipline than that."

He sighs. "Do as you wish where it concerns the inferno and calling Oxious in front of him though I doubt you will find what your looking for but do not blatantly attack pl people in there own homes especially when you are breaking and entering. You may not give a damn about influence and politics but I do! We need this town. It could open so many doors but if you make it to where those doors are slammed in our faces so help me Alrik........we will find out what that lightning of yours can do."

Atriox sighs again. "I'm sorry.........I dont want to fight with you my freind its been a long week. I'm honestly ready to get out and explore and sink my glaive into something. Let's us bury it and what happens will happen yes ?

Alrik, still looking out the window, nods. "Whatever we're going to do, we have tomorrow and the day after to do it... the Guard will be here in three days. Magus Jaundree, as well as at least two others are en route for the tribunal of that mage we captured..."

He turns and looks at Atriox. "They'll most likely call us both as witnesses in that matter, as well as your hired men. They need to know to answer the questions truthfully, honestly, and as quickly as possible... especially if Trak'skulan is the one asking questions..."

Atriox nods his head. "Hopefully we can get it done in two days. We will have to work hard and fast. Might not get any sleep. I'll let the men know what to expect. Now take a look at this map of the Goblin encampment and let me hear what you think."

Atriox walks over and puts the map on the table.

Alrik looks at it, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Looks like they've amassed quite the force... more than you, Tak, and myself can take, even with your hired swords... and I doubt the townsfolk will be any use to us... pitchforks and shovels aren't very effective against swords and armor."

"Goblins are stupid enough we could probably lure them into a trap... hobgoblins and bugbears won't be so easily fooled..." he glances around the room, as if looking for something.

"I wonder...." Walking over to his satchel, he pulls out a leather bound book and flips a few pages, shaking his head each time. "Aha!" He slaps the page. "Sabrila's Nettle... a mind numbing toxin that is nearly undetectable without the use of magic... if we could get our hands on some, put it into a few of the alcohol barrels, and then stage ourselves for them to take it..." he walks over, showing Atriox the book

Atriox nods "that could work but where could we get some? We need it now. More like yesterday. We could also see if the outpost could spare a few men but I'd rather that be the Last resort."

"It says it grows abundantly in any climate, so I'm sure if we ask the local herbalists we could either buy some or at least be pointed in the right direction..."

He smirks. "More often than not, plants used for toxins and poisons aren't sold due to their nature... but I'm sure in a town like this one, there's at least one herb shop with... nefarious... plants."

Atriox grunts. "Very well first thing in the morning we get our armor then you go and find out about the poison. We will meet in front of the town's inn. Sound good ?

"Agreed..." he walks back over to put his book away in his satchel.  "perhaps Tuck and his friends may actually be of use..." he mutters

Atriox heads to the door. "Sounds like a plan. I'll see you at dawn. I have an appointment to keep till then." He winks at Alrik and leaves

As the Dragonborn opens the door, Alrik smirks. "Yeah, I bet you do... do yourself and Dahlia a favor, tell the chef you want the new special... you won't regret it!"

Atriox laughs as he goes out the door "I'll consider it !"

He heads down to the baths to hop in and see if Dahlia is there already.

As you come down the stairs, you actually bump into her. "OH! Hi Atriox! I was just up to see you, one of the girls mentioned you'd returned." She grins, but rolls her eyes. "She got distracted and forgot to mention it was like.. an hour ago. My apologies."

Looking over her shoulder, she glances at the tables in the dining area and the bar. "Iiiii see you have the whole gang here now, huh? I'm just glad they're behaving." She chuckles a bit.

Atriox chuckles. "Its alright I was having a private conversation with Alrik. "

He looks over at his men. "Not the whole gang but most of them. Were missing Nathaniel and You of course."

He looks at her with a smile. "I wish you were coming we could really use the extra hand on this one, and I know you handle yourself."

She laughs as she leads the way to the baths. "I appreciate your enthusiasm about my talents. And honestly, I wouldn't mind coming. But..." Dahlia sighs a bit, stepping in the water. "Well, you know."

Atriox walks with her. "Indeed. I'm tempted to go through the portal and beg Oxious to let you come. Perhaps he'll consider it once your gift that I'm having made is done."

He gives her a sly sideways smile.

She gives him a funny look, a growing smile on her face. "What gift?" She splashes you. "And how will that sway Oxious? Does it make duplicates of me?"

Atriox keeps smirking and says "let's just say itll add an extra layer of protection that no one will know about."

Dahlia shakes her head with a laugh. "You and your plans... Keep your secrets, then." She winks. "But if it's done while I'm still working here, you might have to run it by Oxious first for testing. He uh..."
She scoots closer to talk quietly to you. "Well we're discouraged from taking gifts from patrons. It's completely banned now with what happened to Magnolia."

Atriox let's loose a playful growl. "Oxious and me have a bit of an understanding. I think we see eye to eye. If he has a problem with it the old Billy goat can come to me about it."

Dahlia makes a face like she's trying not to laugh. A snort escapes anyway. "Pfttt... Old billy goat huh? I think he would wanna fry anyone who called him that."

Atriox chuckles. "Well I did a few hours ago and he threw a bag of magical coins at my chest does that count ?"

She looks shocked. "Wait, you--you called him that? And he did? He threw money at you? This IS Oxious we're talking about, right?" Dahlia looks beside herself, her smile even bigger.

He laughs. "I sure did, and it was definitely him in his house no less."

"I'm amazed. I can't even picture it! It's so unlike him, and I've known him for years." She laughs, leaning back and looking up at the ceiling. "He has seemed stressed lately. Maybe these visits of yours will loosen him up again."

Atriox snorts. "One would hope huh ?" He uses his tail to throw a small splash on her.

She blocks it with her arm and her golden eyes glint playfully at Atriox. "He is kind, sometimes. He has his days." She laughs. "I know it's probably hard to believe."

Atriox kinda gets a far off look that is way to serious

"Nahhhhh I believe it. We all have our days, trust me. I think Oxious is a creature surrounded by a town that doesn't understand who or what he is............ I can understand that."

Dahlia nods. "Yeah... I did too. I think that's why I got along with him when I first met him. I could tell he had more than what the outside of him showed." She looks a little sheepish and swishes her tail in the water, contemplative.

She studies Atriox out of the corner of her eye. "Have you been okay? I'm sure being in a place like Dragonshore is rather... out of your element, as a prince."

Atriox let's out a bit of a bitter laugh. "I've been out of my element since I was 8......but I'm still here. Despite everything this worlds tried to do about it."

"I see... you're a strong warrior, Atriox. The world likes to eat those that are weak."

Atriox gives a mischievous smile. "The world better watch out or I might eat it....."

He stands suddenly and says, "Dry off and get dressed in something then follow me."

She raises an eyebrow. "As you wish." She exits the pool, toweling off the water from her uniform. She wraps up in one of the robes nearby, handing one to Atriox. "Where would you like to go?"

Atriox just chuckles. "You will see. Hopefully this works out." He heads torwards the basement and the magical portal.

She follows after, somewhat nervously. "W-what are we doing? We're just going to his house? In bath robes?"

He chuckles. "I am. You can come if you'd like. I'd like you to be there."

Dahlia hesitates. "Technically I'm not supposed to leave the Fang, and... I don't want to get either of us into trouble..." She looks nervous but she is really fond of being with you. (Make a persuasion check)

(LOL Aubrey... 23..)

She can't break away from the look in your eyes. "A-alright, I'll come along I suppose. But if anyone asks it was your idea. I'm also not going to make this weirder than it already is..." She chuckles a little, stopping in her room to switch into some dry attire.

Atriox chuckles. "I'll take all the blame my dear don't you worry."

"Do you... remember how to get inside?" She eyes the bookshelf. (You can make an arcana or a history check to see if you remember....lol)

(18) You recall the pattern perfectly, seeing Alrik do it the last time you were in here.

Atriox grins at himself as his does the pattern.

As the bookshelf slide apart to reveal the portal Atriox gives her a sly smile then steps through

You feel the whirlpool sensation sucking you through the glittering blackness, and you appear in the parlor from earlier. It's empty right now, and Dahlia pops in right behind you. She stumbles right into your back, not expecting the feeling that gave her.

Atriox catches her chuckling "it's an interesting feeling isn't it?"

Atriox strides forward not completely yelling but loud enough Oxious will probably hear them "Oxious you have guests !"

Atriox sits down and motions Dahlia to do the same.

Dahlia looks around with sincere interest and sits with you on one of the couches. After a minute, the door the door opens... but no one is there.

As you turn to look at it, you feel Dahlia tug hard on one of your horns.

Atriox looks over a bit nervous now

Dahlia looks at you funny. "Why'd you move like that? You... jerked? Are you okay?"

You feel another hard tug on your horn from behind you, and then a shove from the couch.

Atriox bewildered looks all around for a target now

Dahlia yelps, dragged by her tail off of the couch. She then starts laughing uncontrollably. "WHA- Atriox help!!"

You see her double over, trying to swing her arms around and knock away something.

Atriox roars "Oxious you've had your fun now show yourself before I burn your house to cinders !"

Dahlia breaks free of whatever she's being grabbed by and takes a swing. Her hand connects with something and a burst of energy puffs outward like a shower of light, or glass breaking in the sun.

A slow clapping can be heard as Oxious walks in the room, a very bored expression on his face. "Braaaaavo! You defeated my unseen servant. Faaaantastic." The sarcasm dripping from his voice is apparent. He's dressed in a red silk robe, tied with a sash. He looks like he might have been in bed.

"You threaten to burn my house down? Pray tell, over me having a little enjoyment with the uninvited guests, that have so mercifully woken me from the cruel jaws of sleep? Thank you, thank you. You're too kind."
The wizard glares at the bookshelf portal, letting out a deep sigh. He grumbles under his breath. "I really should have taken care of that earlier..."

Atriox grunts with a sarcastic smile. "of course I wouldn't have done it my freind.I was just trying to get your attention is all. Please forgive this intrusion."

He raises his eyebrow. "Indeed."

Atriox motions to a chair "would you please sit down I have a proposal for you. I know this will probably annoy you but please hear me out Oxious."

He looks annoyed. "Oh you have noooo idea how true that is, dragonborn."

Oxious sits in a chair. "You have 15 seconds before I blast you back through that portal or out my window. Go."

Atriox nods quickly "tomorrow we leave for a two part mission that will take two days. We will be spying on the Kobolds from a hidden cave. Our objective should everything go well is to get a good amount if not all the kobolds on our side. We plan on doing this mainly by taking out one of there natural rivals. The goblins. This is they're camp."

He takes the map over to Oxious.

"Hm." Oxious takes the map. "10 seconds."

Atriox glares at him. "As you can see it will be no easy feat. It's a good camp.......for Goblins. We have a poison in mind that we are going to use to spike some barrels of alchohol. But say this even remotely works I doubt we can escape a fight."

Atriox takes a deep breath

"I know you want your employees to be safe and I deeply respect that. I do. But hear me out. Dahlia has proven she can handle a fight. She has a sword of high quality that she took from a defeated undead. She is also a very skilled healer. We need all the help we can get. I know Dahlia is more than willing. She enjoyed our last adventure. I'm asking.......Nay begging you to allow her to accompany us. Hell you could come to I'm sure you know your way around s fight. I would also be willing to pay for Dahlias time of course to reimburse you."
(Persuasion 17)

He stares at Atriox for the entire 10 seconds, then physically turns away from the dragonborn. He faces Dahlia, leaning forward towards her.
"Hello darling. How are you?"

She glances at Atriox and then back at Oxious. "I'm good! Real good. How are you?" She cringes a bit at how awkward she's being, thrown off by his behavior.

"Oh I'm swell, just swell." He smiles.

"Dear... You know how I am about contracts." He keeps smiling, giving a apologetic look.

"I know, sir." She sheepishly chuckles under his gaze. "And I know this is probably... not allowed, as I'm not in the Velvet Fang anymore."

He smiles a bit more, nodding. "Yes, this is in fact in breech of your contract, and our guest of the Velvet Fang knows this."

She glances down for a moment. "Y-yes."

"And now I am hearing that my beautiful flower wishes to depart to the wilds to fight... goblins? Is this what you wish?"

"I... y-yes, I do. Actually. I would very much like to."

He gives her a long look. "It would require me to modify the contract. Is that acceptable?"

"What would the terms be?"

He leans back again in his chair. "Your contract is extended by one year at the Velvet Fang. And you are not allowed to be injured."

He turns to stare at Atriox again. "If she is, if even one hair on her head is hurt, you will have no further contact with her and you are to return to me and be at my beck and call for 3 days."

Atriox thinks it over. wondering if he can twist Oxious words against him.

"So if I agree and Dahlia gets a scratch. Just one scratch. She has to work at the Fang for an extra year plus I must serve you for 3 straight days yes ?"

Atriox raises a eyebrow while giving and evil mischievous smile

"We will be gone for two days and returning on the third. That just happens to be the day the Inferno arrives for the trial. A trial that you Oxious you will be put on. A trial where me and my men will testify along with Alrik. What we say will certainly have an impact. Say you Oxious are convicted of Necromancy you will be imprisoned. I can buy the Fang for cheap and just release Dahlia. I will also not be obligated to follow the orders of a damned man! Hows that sound Oxious ?
(Intimidation 16+2)

The placid smile fades off of the tiefling's face. "It sounds asinine."

He gets up and paces slowly around the room. He's quiet for a minute. "Tell me, what evidence do you have of my association with the dark arts of Necromancy?"

Atriox snorts. "Me personally? None. But Alrik saw you with a glove full of runes that apparently extracts memories.......very painfully. To the point it's almost banned. Then he says you had a copy of what looked like the Necromancers ring. He also will tell them that you pulled a wand and invoked the name of Asmodeus the lord of lies."

Atriox chuckles. "I dont think you did it personally. But you have chosen to be difficult ever since I've met you. Its only fair if i choose to do the same Oxious."

He stops and stares out the window. "I can say the same for you and your friends. I can list a plethora of instances that have irked me, but I know it will be of no use other than to waste more of my precious sleep."

Turning around he walks towards you. "If he saw the ring, he was obviously spying on me talking with poor Magnolia at the Fang." He holds his hands out, a ring materializing in one hand, a bag of coins in the other. "I had bound her with a spell of my own because I did not know what spells that villain placed upon her. The ring, she described to me in detail... I replicated it and she confirmed it, so I could perform research with Olohand."

He snorts, waving the prestidigitation mirages away. They disappear in a glittering smoke. "Of course I don't HAVE the ring, it would have actually been easier to study if it wasn't broken." He glances at Dahlia. "But I know it is for the best, should it have fallen into another innocent's hands."

"As for the gloves..." He sighs. Going over to a chest, he opens it and withdraws the same pair he'd used before. "I myself am not the greatest with Divination spells. I... procured these. Yes the action of memory extraction can be painful, but mostly for those that resist it. Magnolia--" he pauses. "She asked me to do so, to prove her innocence. To show me what she saw, even if she couldn't remember it herself."
"Regardless if you believe me, I would gladly go before the Mage Guard and testify of my innocence. I am no supporter of the necrotic arts."

Atriox nods. "I agree. Like I said I don't think you did it Oxious and I wished you hadn't backed me into a corner. I wish you could respect me the way I respect you even if you dont wish to be freinds. I will do what I have to."

Atriox gets up and holds a hand out to Dahlia.

"What corner? I'M the one in a corner. Are you threatening to also place false evidence against me to steal the Velvet Fang?" He gives you a hard stare, walking in front of the portal.

Atriox glare goes frigid. "Excuse me ? I came here to make a deal with you. I offered fair reimbursement for Dahlia. I begged you. Me beg ! Bahhhh. Then you raise the stakes tenfold by forcing her into another year of servitude and trying to make me slave to you as well. ME a PRINCE! I could have your head right now and offer it up to whatever hellspawn you call parent! And get away with it!

Atriox grunts steam trying to reign himself in.

"I respect you. A great deal. A creature living amongst so many humans and people who dont understand you. Where you come from. Who make judgment about you on so little facts. I know Exactly how that feels. Theres some much Draconic hatred in this town I can barely breath ! But instead of being natural allies as we should ! You've made it impossible at every turn !"

His voice suddenly grows ten times the volume. "Exactly! I've carved out a business here with blood, sweat and tears! I've MADE myself something here! And I'm not going to let some uppity prince of a dead kingdom take it from me!"

He grimaces. You see his eye twitching. "I--I'm sorry. That wasn't civil of me." He clears his throat, rubbing his temple with his hand. "I was hoping to make a hard deal that I know you wouldn't accept. I just... don't want her put in danger again. By you or anyone. Two of them have almost lost their precious lives and it's been around you hooligans. I just..." He grumbles.

Atriox is taken back by what he just witnessed.

"I..........I apologize as well. I wasn't very civil either. In truth I would never try to take the fang from you. I've seen how much you care about it, and how good you are at running it. Besides I have my eyes on something bigger Oxious. I don't want to be enemies I want to give you a freind but you have to stop pushing."

Atriox let's out a sad sigh almost

"You know this could even help you ! Dahlia was so popular after our first adventure what would happen if she did this ? The fang would be more popular than ever ! The place where you can pay for the company of the velvet fangs healing adventurer princess who helped save the town. Twice.

His eyes narrow. You can tell that he's thinking about what you've said and how it would affect his business. He paces around the room a little more, leaving the portal alone. "I suppose that's a fair point... but what happens should she get injured? I would be beside myself. What is the compensation there?"

Atriox grunts thinking it over

"Its an adventure Oxious. A mission. Shes bound to get a cut or scrape.she will be by me the whole time. And I do mean right by me.But your blind if you cant see what I'm willing to do for her. I'll take any blow aimed at her. Plus I'm having something special made for her which I suppose you ought to know about."

He walks over amd whispers to Oxious all about what hes having made for Dahlia

"On top of that like I said, Your more than free to join us. Your help could be invaluable. Plus maybe fighting alongside you will help show Alrik your not the enemy he thinks you are eh ? On top of that I'll give you 50 gold for two days of her time."

He takes some time to consider this. Dahlia looks at him, a flicker of hope on her face. Looking between the two of you, he gets a funny expression.

"Dahlia, please go back through the portal now."

She looks surprised, but nods. "Yes sir, as you wish." With one last look at Atriox she steps through to the Fang once more.

Oxious approaches Atriox, now that they're alone in the room. He extends his hand. "It's a deal then. 50 gold for two days of her time. Your protection over her. But I must reject the offer to join, I don't think it is in either of our best interests." He smirks a little.

While still holding the dragonborn's hand he leans forward, studying Atriox's eyes. It's a very odd, searching look. "You really do like her, don't you? Not just as a patron of the Velvet Fang."

"The commitment you have to her is... admirable. Fool hearty, but admirable." He lets go of your hand. "You remind me of myself. Maybe we do have more in common than I thought."

Atriox happily shakes his hand and gives him the fifty gold he heads torwards the portal but stops right before entering and talks to the tiefling behind him

"I am rather fond of her this is true. As well as us being alike. I'm glad you see that. When I return perhaps we can talk more. I meant what I said about being allies.....freinds even."

Atriox turns his head then to look at Oxious, a smile on his face

"Its true I might be the prince of a dead kingdom. But what is dead may never die. This is a smaller step in a much bigger plan Oxious. Skyhold will rise again and when it does itll be ten times bigger than my parents could have ever dreamed."

With that he takes the last step into the portal.

(Niiiiiice... that was fantastic. You did amazing with that.)
(Thanks lol glad you liked it)
(Grayjoy motto! I seent it! Lol)
(Grayjoy?)
(Game of Thrones family. They rule the Iron Islands. Their motto is "What is dead may never die." They're pretty tough.)
(Ooooooh!!! XD that's cool!)

Dahlia waits with anxious excitement as you come back to the room in the Fang. Her tail swishes a little. "How did things go?"

Atriox smirks to himself inwardly but outward he looks sad. He holds out his hand to her

"We must enjoy tonight while it lasts I'm afraid................because at dawn you need to be up bright and early with your gear on!"

He finally smiles

Her look of concern turns to one of shock. "W-wait what? Really!?" Her golden eyes light up. "He actually agreed!?"

Atriox nods slowly with a smile "indeed he did. For 50 gold amd my promise to take any blow meant for you......no matter how severe."

Dahlia jumps on Atriox in an enthusiastic hug. "I'm going to make sure to stay safe, so you do too! I'm so excited!"

Atriox laughs. "I'm glad your excited. I knew you'd be happy. Now come we have celebrating to do !"

She laughs, heading back upstairs with you. She can't stop smiling.

You all have a fantastic evening of relaxation. Your last night here is full of amazing food, alcohol, music, and of course women. The night passes quickly.

Day 5 in Dragonshore (Part 3)

Before actually going to the pub, Alrik ducks into the back door of the Velvet Fang and slips into his room. (Not rolling stealth, because he's been trained in different ways of not being seen. Act like you belong and people will think you do!)

He changes out of his uniform and then while looking in the mirror, brings his hand up to his face and with a small static shock, changes his appearance. Instead of the storm blue eyes, he now appears to have forest green eyes and dark red hair, accompanied by a set of three scars running across his right cheek. He scratches the red goatee and smirks at himself in the mirror.

Being careful not to be seen coming out of his room, he begins walking out of The Fang and toward the pub

As you approach the Dragon's Lair Inn, you hear quite a party going on inside. Entering through the swinging doors, a short human woman with long braided blonde hair turns around to you at the bar, cleaning a glass with a cloth. She speaks loudly over the noise: "Hello dear, what can I get for you?"

Alrik walks over to the bar, and slipping the barmaid a gold coin, whispers, "I'll take a bottle of water, but if anyone asks, it is whiskey..."

She chuckles, "Whatever you want, darlin'. I think those boys won't mind what you're drinking as long as you're having fun." She winks, passing Alrik a bottle and pocketing the coin.

You see several groups, the chiefmost of which is centered around Petvin. He looks rather inebriated, rosy cheeked and laughing with some farmers and merchants.

(You can slip in rumors, or make checks to hear tidbits of things, whatever you want xD

Alrik goes and leans against a nearby pillar and begins drinking straight from the bottle, making sure to spill a little of the brown liquid down his chin. (Prestidigitation for the win! Lol)

After a few large swallows, he walks over and begins joining the large crowd of people.

(Rofllllll that's clever..... I love it

Dragging a chair over, Alrik speaks up in a small lull of the group. "Hey! What do you get when you cross a mage with a donkey?"

Petvin perks up, a cheeky smile on his face and his eyes glazed over. The cleric definitely has his own vices. "Whassat? Whadya get?"

Alrik takes another big swig from his bottle, wiping the spillage with the back of his hand. "That jackass storm mage that came into town!" He laughs at his own joke, pounding the table. "I've ran into him before... has a right good way of mucking things up with the ladyfolk..."

(Omgosh what.. Rofl 🤣😂

Petvin chokes on a sip of his hard cider, laughing and trying to stop it from spraying too bad. "Aaaahaha!! Good one, he uuuh.... -hic- definitely seemed the type when I mettem, but.... Notta bad fella, we all gotta slewa ladyfolk trouble, don't we fellas? Haha!" The other men chuckle and down some more alcohol, one or two patting you on the shoulder and pulling you closer into the table, happy to have you.

One farmer nudges you. "What other stories ya got, man? We heard all ours ten times over, tell us some new ones stranger! Mr...?"

"Call me Tyrius. An' do I got a story for ya! I went over to the ladies house y'all have, right? The Velvet Fang I think it's called? Saw a real pretty dark elf, and asked for her company for the night. We got to talkin' and she said..." he takes another drink.

"She said that the owner knowingly let that necromancer come into his establishment! Invited him, even!"

(Meh... fair to meddling bluff roll... 14)

(I figure they're all drunk, so they won't know the difference between a lie and truth. Haha)

(Whaaaaat.. Dude.. Rofl......what you trying to mess with xD

"Wait, no... it weren't her that told me... but I heard it while I was eating at the Fang... sorry, I been at the bottle sl bit early today." He grins

(I'll roll with.... Disadvantage for sure

"But youse fellas don't wanna hear about youse own town!" He slaps one of the fellows next to him on the shoulder. "You wanna hear about me and my stories! Boy I tell ya, I got a good one for youse guys!"

(Man, I rolled two 4's....haha.)

"Wh-whaaaat?" The men gape a bit, some of them sobering up a little. "The dragon guy said wed'a been dead anoth'r night... No way Oxy woulda known would he?" "Nah, not unless a necro be blabbin whatsit, or cartin' round a carcass..." "Yes he woulda known, he's the smartest ass we got in town, we pony up our money to em... Aaha.. You seen the magic he's got."

They all start mumbling together about several things, a few still not caring and wanting to hear your other stories. "Go on man, what else ya got?"

Alrik stands up, feinting a drunken sway. "I met a fella on the road... said he got kicked out of the town here by the mayor for..." he scratches his head and squints, like he's trying to remember, then takes another drink. "For tryin' to warn youse all about some nasty threat... yer mayor kinda blew it off like he already knew!"

He fakes nearly falling over, and sits back down with a wobble, bracing himself on the man next to him and laughing. "The seas be livin' in me legs!"

(17 deception)

(6 with disadvantage) "Old man, sit down! You're makin' me dizzy with all your wibbilin' goin' on!" The man you're bracing against holds you tight, laughing. "Well Cere knows a lot of a lot, that man's been the backbone of this town for years!" "Yeeeeah but whada expect... Upper class men always the same... Even Oxy and that new bloke, Atriox, -hic- prolly a pompous bastard like the rest of em..." "Oh come off it ya old salt mine, stop yer complainin..." A few ask for more stories.

"Anyway, anyways... youse fellas know what a gnoll is? Big ugly beast... like to eat ya while youse still kickin... I once got into a tussle with one of em." He points to the scars on his face. "Tried to claw my eye clean out, he did! Luckily I got away, but I lost my way and found myself stranded with no food. Happened to get found l did... found by youse library owner!" He takes another drink from his bottle, spilling more down his goatee. "Course he didn't know I'd follow him, but he found me, he did!"

(11 deception... my lowest roll yet. I rolled a 6... haha)

(Nat 1...XD) "What? Poor man, bad luck be followin' him lately..." Several of them shake their heads. "Hearta gold, he is. Only row he ever had was with that coot Olohand but bah, who could blame him! Heard he's recoverin over at the temple he is..."

"Yeah, yeah, lotsa strange things out there lately! -hic- undead, you bein' attacked by gnolls! Necromancers! Orc raiders now?" "I even saw a kobold sneakin' through town the other night on me way home... -hic- headin out to goodness knows where. Last one I saw took out ol' Mr. Weaver, his son's over at the orphanage with the otherens... Woulda clubbed it over the head meself if ida been sober enough to catch em. Sneaky bastard, blood on em and all. All sorts of mischief..."

"That kobold that's with ol' Alrik? Nah, youse don't wanna be hurtin' him none! Dontcha know? He be a kobold of legend! Them stars across the seas tell of him! Say he's gonna be the strongest kobold the world's ever seen, and that he will unite all kobolds and take them to a homeland where they'll be safe!" He takes another drink, then starts fumbling with a cigarette. Lighting it with the candle in the middle of the table, he leans back and exhales. "I dunno about youse fellas, but kobold free roadways sound nice! I say let him take em to a homeland!"

(16)

 (6) "Bah, take em all I wager! That'd be a miracle, iffen it happens! Blasted buggers can go far from here for all I care, roads ain't safe." "Nah, I dunno what kobold it was, they're all alike ain't they? But covered in blood eh? I'm sure it was em, had a messed up face he did. Not sure what company OR legends that mage donkey be hangin' out with! Heh..." "You're one to jabber, you shoulda heard the soldiers talk of it, how they rounded up hundreds! Like slaughterin' squealin' chickens, but they just keep comin'..."

Petvin leans on the table, rubbing his temple. "Y'all yammerin way too loud now, comeon... Don't scare our guest away, he'll think our town is cursed! Sorry, Tyrius, tellem more! I wanna hear bout wheres you from... Any place near here?"

Alrik waves the conversation off, turning his attention to Petvin. "I actually come from a place a long ways from here... little port town called Winterhold. Way up north."

"Oooooh....." he stares blankly for a moment. "Neber heard of it..."

"Not many have. Like I said, it's real little. Tough people, though! Have to be... gotta deal with trolls and wolves and other nasties..." he polishes off his bottle and cigarette, then nods to the group. "Well, I'm gonna go find some nice soft hay to climb in... youse people charge too much for a room!" He laughs and stumbles his way to the door.

Most of the men cheer at your passing and inebriated state, some sad to see you go, others laughing at your jokes. You pass back outside into the cool night air. Rumors will start flowing, soon enough...

Alrik looks around, smiling to himself as he walks back to the Velvet Fang. Making his way carefully in through the window to his room, he allows the illusion to fade and changes back into his uniform before going out to the dinner buffet.

(Niiiice... Love the use of your spells)

***

Atriox. You can hear a strange noise coming from the room, a kind of grating whistle in your ears. The room is dimly lit, but you can see the pile of treasure from the Crypt in the corner. It looks like there's more then you remember... Other odd trinkets are stuck in along with the treasure chest and gear.

There are bottles of alcohol, some rather nice years indeed... You you also see some other little bags of money lying around, in satchels and purses that you don't recognize, along with a stack of silk robes, a pair of manacles, a bent quarterstaff, a broken lute, a leatherskin drum, some beaver skin boots and a pair of elk antlers.

Tak pops up on the other side of the bed, holding a little pan flute and wearing a funny hat. When he sees you and tosses the flute in the pile with a clatter, climbing on the bed. He snatches the hat off. "Hi... Uh... Things go okay?"

Atriox grunts in amusement

"Yes little one everything is fine. I see that you.......added to our treasure horde and that you've taken an interest in music."

He looks at the items and smiles a little. "You haven't been back for a while, and there's a funny room downstairs with all sorts of stuff. Considering the dust I don't think they care too much about the things that are there... And you wanted things for your kingdom. I wanted... To... Help." He chews on the words a little.

The kobold looks a little downcast. "I've been working on it since the other night. I thought..." he seems to be thinking about what happened earlier that day.

"I've been trying to help." He grumbles a little. "Not hurt."

Atriox listens and then takes a big slurp of wine. He then goes and sits by Tak.

"Its alright Tak. Everything is ok. Its behind us. So....... you wanna hear about the kobolds I grew up with ?

He looks up, a bit intrigued. "What were they like?"

Atriox ponders the question a bit. A million answers coming to mind.

After a minute he begins by saying "they were different, not necessarily in body but in life style if that makes sense."
He looks at Tak
"Skyhold was a place were anyone could come in live. No matter where you were from. You lived in the forest yes ? Well the kobolds I grew up with lived in these......tents I guess you would call them. They where merchants, scouts, Fishermen you name it. There tents where always brightly colored."

Atriox smiles at the memory

"As to what they actually looked like ? They were so many diverse colors. At Skyhold there wasn't really tribes you see."

Tak furrows his brow. "Really? Like... One big tribe?"

Atriox smiles an nods his head "yes like one big tribe. Exactly. I use to run around with a few kobold children. Some of my best freinds where kobolds. Back then I was no bigger than them."

He laughs at the thought

"Maybe a bit broader but same height give or take."

Tak snorts a laugh, imagining it. He fiddles with his claws as he thinks. "Even as a prince lord, you still had kobold friends?"

Atriox looks at Tak with and interesting face

"Humans might have there strange customs but my people are my people. I think no less of them and value them greatly. We all have something to contribute Tak."
He gives Tak a look

"Speaking of there was something I specifically want to talk about. We will be leaving soon for the temple. I.........I know you are uncomfortable about this but I need you to tell me everything you can about the kobolds there. And the dragon if you know anything

Tak stares at Atriox for a long moment in silence. He exhales, unsure of where to start. "Tyranus..." He says the name with kind of a bitter note, much different than how he referred to the dragon when you first met him. "A coalition of kobold came from the temple one day, on behalf of Tyranus."

"We were fine, happy. We followed our tribe leader, our elders. But they brought gifts of trinkets and jewels, and word that their dragon was looking for more. Wanted to share with more, bring about a land for dragonkind alike. Tyranus lived far away, but wished to have the territory here again. Knew of the great old dragon. Never knew where treasure was, but... Tyranus wanted it."

He shifts a little, uncomfortable. "I didn't... I didn't think it was good. It felt... sour. But tribe leaders saw jewels, saw coin, chance for bigger better tribe. Even if with blue kobolds that they were." He tilts his head. "They different from us. Not bad... but... better for the rivers. The lakes in the north. Felt strange with so many more around. They all came from the temple, which was old and empty for a long time."

"We followed them. We were told to help scare the humans. To chase them away. We were to hunt, to kill, to steal. The blues helped. But..." He trails off and is quiet for a time. He looks lost.

"The blues, much more viscous..." He blinks. "Learned some things from them. They attack not just to kill, but to hurt first. They're sly. Tricky with words. You should remember that."

"The men from the mountains, the soldiers... They killed viciously... I did too. I wish both that I didn't, and that I did more." His eyes burn. "Once... well..." He trails off, wringing his claws roughly.

He pauses for a few minutes before continuing. "Tyranus had numbers. More blues always came. I never saw Tyranus. Never was allowed in the temple. There were some camps outside, yes, most of us slept there. Ate... raid, come back. Sleep, eat... again and again. Tyranus is strong, the blues said. Strong and wise. But I don't think so. I think only greedy. Sly. Not that all whites are like that." He glances at Atriox a bit uncertainly, not wanting to be insulting. "I don't think Tyranus really care for us is all... Not really."

"Just in a few days I see you.... Kind. Tough. But fair. You really could have killed me. I deserved it." He looks a bit blank. "But you spared me. Not weak for it though... you have purpose. Give others purpose. You're good."

Atriox takes another swig of wine

"I sure try Tak.......I don't know if I'll always be able to show mercy though........I dont want to kill this Tyranus but there can only be one king and this land is mine. Any chance if beaten he'd join us i wonder."

"For sure though we need to get most of these kobolds to follow us. Are there any from your tribe? Or any that you trust or could persuade to join us ?"

He looks at you in awe at the idea of killing Tyranus, but then a little uncertain. "I never met Tyranus, so... I'm not sure. Perhaps the dragon can be bartered with. The other kobolds..." He trails off and looks down.

"None are from my tribe. I... They're all blues now." He pauses. "Maybe some didn't mind me, but they weren't... keen. The blues I fought with were very much focused on battle. War. Perfection. I was an outcast. They also aren't..." He hesitates. "They fought to the death. They never ran. If you were beaten, if you were scarred, if you ran away, you were seen as weak." He turns to show the scar on his face and arm, the slash on his chest from the goblins. "It would be a big surprise if they liked me any more now than they did before."

"If there were some from my own tribe, I'm sure I..." He sighs. "Nevermind."

Atriox grunts in disgust at the description of blue kobolds

"Is there something you'd like to tell me Tak or get of your chest ? I'm here for you my little freind we've all been through alot together already."

Tak hesitates, taking out his coin and slowly turning it in his claws. "Just..." He clears his throat. "Maybe the blues will listen if they see your power. You're strong. You may sway some of them. They like power."

Alrik stares at the crowded dining room of The Fang, getting more and more crowded by the minute. With a huff, he pulls his hood up and walks upstairs, leaving his half eaten plate and mug of juice. "I hate crowds..." he mutters as he summits the steps. "Can't see where the attack is coming from... can't defend yourself... just... BAM!" He punches his fist into the palm of his hand. "Attacked from nowhere and the coward slinks back into the crowd..." he growls.

(He hasn't drank for real in a while... XD I noticed you've been doing that.)

(Probably loud enough at times of his muttering that Tak and Atriox heard him... if they were listening...)

(He's been fighting... he doesn't drink when he's fighting...

(Also he's kinda grumpy that he hasn't been able to drink... lol. He enjoys it, but he wants to stay vigilant

Having just finished talking, Tak jumps terribly at the loud "BAM" from the hall. He stares at the door, then looks at Atriox. He can tell it's Alrik, and looks a bit worried--still remembering how he attacked him earlier that day.

(Would Alrik just come in to the room? XD Or nah? If he's mad enough?)

(He's not mad, so much as cautious... he's very wary of crowds... basically he was grumbling that he didn't feel comfortable and didn't get to finish his meal. Haha

(Right XD I guess that's what I meant, my bad)

Tak looks at the door again and cautiously jumps off the bed. Grabbing a javelin he goes to open it. Alrik, you see the kobold's luminescent yellowish eyes peek out, cowering a bit. "Storm Face in trouble? N-need help?" He feels silly saying it, as he's not really any match for either of the men let alone someone who could threaten them.

Alrik nods with a half grin at Tak's response and the fact he has a javelin. "I'm alright, Tak... dining area was getting a bit too crowded and I wasn't finished eating is all. How are you?"

He looks confused at your response, glancing at your bandaged arms. "I-I'm alright." He seems a bit on edge, like he's waiting for some retaliation.

Atriox hears all this and chuckles

"Let him little one then come back and speak with me."

Tak glances between you both, backing away from the door a little. He comes back near the bed and sits on the floor this time, leaning on his javelin with his tail wrapped around him. "What else Atriox want to know?"

Atriox takes a swig of wine then stands.

"We need to make a plan for our next move. As I said I want to try and make peice with the kobolds and possibly Tyranus. But if things don't go to plan we need a plan on how to spy on them and get information on their strengths and weaknesses. Do you have any idea Tak ?."

He thinks for a while, then lowers his head. "I... Don't really know. I was never allowed in the temple, so I don't know what they were up to or the layout inside. All I know is they like... Strength. Power impresses them. And... Trinkets. Gold. But perhaps we could..." His eyes light up a little. "There was a little cave near the temple..? Maybe you could watch them from there, if you wanted."

He eyes the wine you're drinking. He glances at Alrik, then at the bottle again. "Is... That fuzzy sour water?"

"Maybe we bring kobolds fuzzy water... Say it make them stronger. Maybe they think you're friends." He fidgets.

Atriox looks at the wine then laughs hard.

" two very good ideas Tak I like it."

Atriox scratches his chin

"And as a last resort if we had to we could make the barrels of fuzzy waters go boom."

"They can... Do that?"

Atriox gives him a smug smile

"Oh yes the stronger stuff can. The weaker fuzzy water will at least cause fire if lit. Powerful stuff. Bottoms up."

He takes a good sized swig

"Oh..." Tak gulps, watching you guzzle it.

He grips his javelin a bit harder and looks at the door. In undercommon he mumbles, "Tak... Be back in a bit. Fresh air nice."

He gets up and grabs his cloak, eying the loot pile before he heads for the door.

Alrik eyes the pile of random stuff in the corner and chuckles. Ruffling the top of Tak's head, he smiles. "Good to know kobolds here are just like the ones across the ocean. Like to gather treasures!"

Tak looks sheepish but thankful. "Yes, growing it for you. Want help."

Atriox grunts with amusement

"That's alright. We will need all the money we can get. It's going to be a long journey to reach our separate goals. Even then who knows what life will throw at us once we get my home back and Alrik achieves what he has set out to do. What about you Tak. Where do you WANT to be years from now ?"

Tak hovers near the door. "Tak want... To be poweful."

Atriox smiles at the comment thinking it sounds very Draconic.

"That's reasonable I suppose. You could go anywhere you want. Someday I'm going to need someone to help me get kobolds to Skyhold. Once they are there they will also need a tribe leader. I wonder who could maybe do that."

Atriox smirks and looks a Tak

"Cheif Tak Fire-scar that is if you wanted it."

He shuffles his feet. "That generous, very. Maybe... Someday." He looks up and his eyes shine.

Atriox snorts

"My freind dont take this the wrong way but it has nothing to do with generosity. It has everything to do with capabilities."

The kobold blinks, continuing to stare at Atriox. His hands tighten on his javelin and he nods in agreement.

Alrik nods. "So Tak... think the kobolds will believe you if you tell them you know someone with a raging storm in their heart?"

He glances at Alrik, his eyes averted a little. "Maybe. If they see it, they believe it."

Atriox looks at Tak

"Go on little one go have some fun and dont get caught if you do something......."

Atriox smiles at him

Tak smirks. "Yes, sir." He pulls his hood down and skitters out, his claws click clacking on the floorboards.

Atriox looks at Alrik for a moment

"You look far to sober Alrik here."

He tosses the wine to the man

Alrik catches it, but sets it down on the table near Atriox. "I don't drink when I'm expecting attacks... and necromancers are unpredictable."

Atriox nods a little

"Not an unwise choice I suppose though I think we've paused the necromancers plans for now. I suspect we have some time before we see him again."

Atriox grabs the wine and takes a little drink

"I think we need to turn our eyes to the forest for now. This Tyranus does not sit well with me. This is not usual behavior or climate for a white dragon."

Atriox looks slightly worried

You hear a knock at the door and Dahlia peeks in. You see Zinnia is with her and she winks at Alrik. "Hiya gentlemen. Quite a long day you've had, haven't you? Anything we can fetch for your rooms?"

Atriox smiles when he sees them at the door

"Ahhhhh there's my forbidden princess. I actually would like to take a bath with Dahlia so I think I'll part ways with you for the night Alrik. Do try to have some fun. After this there wont be much of a break for awhile."

Atriox winks at him humorously and gets up

Dahlia snorts a little in amusement, giving a fanged smile. She holds the door open for the dragonborn, and Zinnia slips inside. "Hello Alrik, the heroic storm mage of Dragonshore. I heard about the speech... you really are something else."

Leading the way to the baths, Dahlia eyes Atriox. "Any fun new adventures planned now? I'm a little sad I won't be able to come with." She gives a playful pout.

Atriox grunts in amusement

"I don't know about any of it being fun for awhile at least. We are going back into the forest in a day or two. We are going to look into a certain location to see if we can set up a secret camp to spy on the kobolds. Something about that whole situation doesn't sit easy with me for some reason."

He looks at her with a smile

" there are plenty of adventures still to come princess you may yet se plenty of them."

She laughs. "I'm sure you'll do fine. You've helped us so much already." As they arrive at the pools Dahlia snatches two fresh towels along with a bottle of wine for her customer. She sits down behind Atriox once he's in the bath, handing him the bottle and rubbing his shoulders. She runs her hand along his back. "Your wound is starting to look a lot better. I'm glad... It'll scar pretty cleanly, too. Just another story, right?"

Atriox ponders the question for a minute. Something about how she said it doesn't sit right with him.

"He grabs one of her hands that are on his shoulders

"No. Not just another story. The legend of how the Princess Hero of Dragonshore saved a visiting Prince from a far off land that was on the brink of death."

He squizes her hand

"Its something that I will never forget"

She looks both amused and touched at the same time. "Atriox..." Dahlia gives a wan smile and kisses him on the cheek. "Thank you. You're a very kind person. I... won't ever be able to forget you."

Atriox tries not to be saddened by the tone of the conversation.

"Nor I you.......now let's drop this saddens. Say what's your favorite color?"

She chuckles as she goes back to rubbing his shoulders. "You'll think I'm being silly if I say."

Atriox grunts blowing steam

He looks sideways at her raising a created eyebrow playfully

" your not going to make me ask twice are you ?"

She smirks and playfully stays quiet.

Atriox feels the smirk on her face and in the absence of her speaking he guesses her decision. He smirks

He grabs her sneakily with his tail and then pulls her under the water quickly but gently

After just a few seconds he lifts her out of the water in his arms

"Ready to talk yet my lady ?"

Having taken a breath right before the surprise plunge, Dahlia opens her eyes and exhales, taking a deep breath. She tries to keep her composure. "That was sneaky, Prince." She brushes the wet hair out of her golden eyes, giving him a coy look... but no response.

Dahlia's smile grows... She swishes her tail roughly, splashing Atriox hard in the face with a wave of water.

Atriox sputters on the water for a second laughing before he retaliates with his tail. While shes still got water in her face he let's go of her and drops her into the water

The look of surprise on her face is priceless. She falls back in with a splash and a curse, as she tries and fails to grab on to you. (Rolled a 4 xD) Other patrons look over and snicker, laugh, or grumble at the noise.

She twists around in the water and manages to get her feet under her, standing up with a spluttering effort. She wipes off her face and wrings her hair out. "You don't play fair." She chastises him with a smile.

He laughs and smiles back

"Winning is winning my lady no matter how you do it. But I tried to be gentle."

He strokes her face gently

"Now my lady answer the question if you please."

She turns her cheek coyly, looking away and thinking. "My favorite color is white."

She gives him a sidelong glance, smoothing her hair out. "It reminds me of home. The beaches there had white sand, and white trees with silver leaves. It was rather beautiful."

Atriox smiles

"Why would that be silly ? Sounds beautiful. Maybe you will go back someday?"

She looks contemplative. "Maybe so... Some day. It's been a long time, though. I worry it's... changed. Sometimes memories are more beautiful than reality."

She smiles. "What's your favorite color?"

Atriox thinks about it for awhile

" I do like white alot myself but I think.......

He cups her face and looks at her golden eyes

"I think gold is the most beautiful color there is"

Dahlia snickers, shaking her head. "You're one of the cheesiest men I've ever met in my life, Atriox."

"But," she laughs, "unlike most of them I can tell you mean it. You're sweet."

Alrik huffs at Zinnia's remark. "Heroes are people who put other's wellbeing before their own... those things Atriox said about me, while somewhat true, I didn't do to save others. It was to save my own ass."

Zinnia looks a bit taken aback by the response, and grasps around for a different direction to take the conversation. "Well I'm glad you're safe... It sounds like there is a lot of scary stuff going on, and it does make me nervous. I feel safer here with you." She smiles again, hoping to cheer Alrik up.

"Safe is all relative to what you know. Tak and I thought we were safe in that corn field... until we knew the skeletons were there." His eyes glass over slightly as he stares out the window. "Mattias and Stryss thought they were safe. Then the raiders ambushed and took their heads..."

A tear runs down his cheek and an angry scowl comes across his face. "We thought we were safe. And then... that... knife..." he breaks down sobbing, muttering incoherently, rubbing the back of his neck.

She takes a hesitant step forward, her hands to her mouth. "Sir..?" Reaching out she gently brushes his shoulder. "It's okay, you're... you're safe here..."

Despite her profession, the innocence and empathy in her eyes is apparent. Zinnia sits beside Alrik and strokes his hair, hoping to calm the tidal wave of emotion.

After a while the sobs subside, Alrik still breathing heavy and shakily. Still holding the back of his neck, he looks at Zinnia. "I apologize... I have things that haunt my mind."

She stares at him, her blue eyes guileless. "Nothing to apologize for, sir, nothing at all. You've been through a lot, I'm sure... a lot in your short life." Her fingers drifts from his dark hair to the hand on the back of his neck. She holds her hand to it kindly.

"I've been on my own for over twenty years now... other than the occasional orphanage when the guards caught me, but that wasn't often..."

Zinnia's expression softens more. "I'm sorry you grew up as an orphan. We have an orphanage here, actually, I... I feel for the children who end up there. It's hard living on the streets. Do... you want to talk about it, sir? You can relax on your bed, I'm a good listener."

Alrik moves his hand from the back of his neck, shaking his head. "No, but thank you... it's... it's in the past. Something I'll have to deal with eventually."

She nods in understanding. "You're strong. You'll be okay. Can I fetch you anything, sir?"

He stands and begins walking to the door of Atriox's room. "I wouldn't mind something to eat and drink... perhaps a roast chicken and some kind of fruit juice. I'm going to attempt and make use of this ring..." he hold up his left hand, the spell storing ring on his finger.

Zinnia stands too, following him out. "As you wish, I'll make sure to have it brought to you shortly. Good luck." She smiles, looking at the ring curiously.

(Would you like to describe anything about you working with the ring or nah? It's ok either way. Just let me know what spell you wish to store in it. :) )

Once back in his room, Alrik removes his jacket and shirt, knowing from past experience that the process of storing such a powerful spell leaves him exhausted and drenched in sweat. "Alright, let's get this done..."

Focusing on the ring on his finger, he senses the crystals and their ability to store his magic power. He lifts his right hand and holds it out toward the ring, the storm welling up in his eyes, flashing and thundering in them. He pictures the orbs of pure electrical energy in his hands, as he's done hundreds, if not thousands of times...

Instead of the spheres arcing into his hands, a couple of the crystals begin giving a faint blue glow. He collapses into the nearby chair, wiping his forehead and breathing heavy.
(Magic Missile using a level 2 spell slot and +3 sorcery points)

Zinnia eventually returns to Alrik's room, a platter in hand. "Chicken as requested sir, with greens and fresh gooseberry cider." She gives him a concerned glance, his exhaustion palpable.

"Magic is... difficult, I'm sure, to manipulate. It's amazing what you can do Alrik. It truly is." She sets down the meal on the table next to him, hovering about a little. She's definitely intrigued by the glowing ring, watching the lights in the jewels.

Alrik nods at Zinnia as she enters the room and almost immediately grabs the juice and drinks nearly half of it in one go. Still gasping for air, he pulls the ring off his finger and holds it out for her to see. After a few deep breaths to calm his breathing, he takes another small drink to wet his mouth and throat. "Magic is best described as a living creature. It has a mind of it's own and you must respect it. if you aren't careful..." he gestures to the purple scar on his face. "It will bite you."

Zinnia sits in another chair nearby, admiring the beautiful ring and its mesmerizing magic. Looking up at Alrik, she gazes at his scar again. "I've seen a lot of people come and go from this place, and I must say, I've never seen a sorcerer quite like you. Your handle on the arcane is... impressive. But I know it's still through your own trials that you've learned. You'll continue to grow, I'm sure of it."

Miss?" He asks Zinnia, and without waiting for her to reply, begins cutting up the rest of the chicken.

"The schools of the arcane are in place to protect mages from their power. To learn it's ways in a careful and controlled manner. I didn't attend one of these schools until I enlisted." He smirks, his eyes flashing with the color and intensity of a lightning strike.

A little surprised by the offer, Zinnia smiles. "White meat is fine, thank you sir. And..." She chuckles, "I'm not entirely surprised at that. You are both controlled and... unpredictable. But in a good way, I think."

Alrik smiles as he puts together a plate for his companion, enjoying her company and kind, honest words. "Indeed..." he chuckles. "I control the arcane energy flowing through my veins as much as I can... but on occasion it gets the better of me and something the Mage Guard calls a reckless spell happens. It's a spell that is emotionally charged, usually cast during a time of intense stress, anger or fear... they're incredibly powerful... but uncontrollable. They can backfire or get out of control." He hands her the plate along with a glass of the juice. "When I enlisted, the Magus, the person in charge of the entire Mage Guard, asked us all what school we attended. When it got to my turn, I didn't lie. I told him I'd never attended one. He assumed my magic was weak and pitiful, and told me to cast a spell... any spell... to try and hit him." Alrik smiles at the memory.

"I later learned he was expecting a feeble spell of some sort, like a single magic missile or a tiny fire charge... instead, what he got was a full blown lightning bolt." He takes a sip of his juice before continuing to regale Zinnia with the story.

"He had no idea how an orphan bastard with no formal training could cast such a spell, until he witnessed the incident only a few weeks later..." he runs his hand down the scar on his face. "He knew instantly that the lightning bolt I threw at him was meager compared to the reckless one I used to kill the basalisk... that's how I earned the nickname The Tempest."

He reaches into the satchel hanging from his chair and holds out a patch for her to see. It has clearly been carefully cut from his uniform. It is a simple gray shield with a storm cloud and lightning bolts arcing from it. "The Mage Guard have mages who specialize in one element or another. Usually they spend their whole life practicing their power." He puts the patch away, back in his satchel.

"Magus Jaundree, also known as The Inferno, is a fire master. He achieved this title at the age of 58. He and I became close friends while I served under him in the deserts... he confided in me that I am the youngest elemental master in the history of the Mage Guard..."

Zinnia partakes of the meal gratefully, enraptured with the story you're sharing. You see her eyes light up in awe and excitement, then with complete delight at the honor you received in the Mage Guard. "You definitely seem young, sir, for having so much power and mastery over your craft. How old are you, Alrik?" She is both curious and honestly, somewhat star-stricken being around you.

"I'm 29. I enlisted when I was 20, and turned 29 on the journey out of the desert." He nibbles at a chicken leg, as if lost in thought. "And how old are you, Miss Zinnia?"

She picks up a tomato and pops it in her mouth with a grin. "I'm 20. Rather new here, to be honest." She chuckles. "But I learn fast."
