Dragonshore's Healing - Atriox - Part 2

The next morning dawns. The room is still dark, but the sounds of the dockyard in the distance and the birdsong in the air make it apparent that some time has passed. Kora is sleeping soundly on the bed as you wake. The evening was definitely... interesting, to say the least. With fresh bite marks along your shoulders and neck, and seeing ones along her, you definitely feel sore... but no hunger or cravings fill you.

Walking to the wash basin and looking in the mirror, you see the scales along your back have deeper cracks of black shadow--each scale fractured by what looks like thousands of small spiderwebs. Your eyes also appear normal, but red rings appear around the irises... they flicker as if with an inner fire. Opening your mouth, your sharp teeth accent your now almost pure white tongue. It's strange to see, but the changes are not wholly unexpected.

Without thinking about it you reach in and splash water on your face. After a moment you freeze, waiting, but the water doesn't seem to affect you at the moment. There is no discomforting tingling, no irritation. You feel stronger. Perhaps this vampirism isn't so bad after all.

@Aubrey Burmaster Atriox, you hear a voice from behind you. "Up so soon? This is the time that's typically used for sleep. Planning for a stroll?"

Atriox chuckles and turns around to look at Kora

She sits on the edge of the bed, the silken sheet covering only her shoulders. It almost looks like a cape or bat wings the way it lays.

"You won't burn to death... Not after last night anyway. You need to deal with things in town, Unbreakable?"

Kora drops the silly charade and moves across the room with rather elegant grace. Dropping the sheet she grabs her gear and begins to don it again.

You see a plethora of tattoos covering her from head to foot; mostly orcish tribal markings but also bats and other strange animals. Across her back are dragon wings in stark black and red ink. You saw them all already but it's intetesting to see them again with fresh eyes.

Atriox looks her over appreciating the art work. Though Dragonborn cant really get tattoos he's always been interested in them. Although he cant help but think for a brief second it's a shame she has all that lovely skin covered in ink......all well. He looks her in the eyes as he speaks

"Indeed theres much to be seen to. One of which is your men. I have an idea of what to do with them for now. And Mayor Cere and I need to discuss what Dragonshore will turn into once I'm gone shortly. He'll need funding for the city's growth. Do you wish to come ?"

Dorokor turns to face you, her eyes a more gentle reddish brown. A smirk grows at the corner of her mouth.

She slips her leather armor top on in a swift, decisive movement and straps it, saying, "Of course... Those orcs who served me, and chose to reform without me, I have... certain words for them. And this mayor of yours."

Walking past you and finally dressed, she scoops up Wound by its handle. Kora sneers, "You are quite the dragonborn, Atriox. Surprise after surprise... where do you need to go first? And what can I assist with?"

Atriox grunts but cant keep the smile of his face

"I'm just glad that I can keep somebody like you on there toes. Surprising you is just an extra benefit. Now your free to talk to your men but watch what you say to Cere. You are on dangerous grounds here and you did just attack them the other night Kora. I'm going to try and make it less hostile for you and your men but they're going to have to work for it."

She smiles, walking around to block you. She puts the flat side of Wound against your chest, keeping you there.

"I'm curious what kind of leader you are. May I ask you a question?"

Atriox squints at her in curiosity

"I suppose so since you asked nicely what do you want to know?"

"If you had individuals working for you, and they challenged your leadership... Even left you. Fought you." Dorokor's eyes flash dangerously. You remember the orcs that sided with you before the battle.

"What would you do? How would you treat insubordination?"

Atriox thinks about it. It's a good question and it has merit to be sure......but this is a delicate topic. He puts a hand on her shoulder flashing his eyes a little back at her

"Kora.........I can Imagine your probably upset at those men and I don't blame you. I'm also sorry for my part in that insubordination."

He pauses to collect his thoughts as he looks at her axe blocking him. After a moment he looks back up at her giving her shoulder another squeeze reassuringly

"Now you asked what I would do. I don't believe in black and white answers. That's what kind of leader I am. Always think about every angle. You should talk with them for sure but always let your men explain themselves. They're answer might surprise you. After that see if you can work on a solution together. If you cant then from they're it gets dicey. From there it's up to you what happens. As a leader. Those men are no less orcs than you. You just have some differences on how you see things. But your all brave and would fight to the bloody end. I would remember that Kora."

(Persuasion 15)

Dorokor watches you carefully. You can see she's thinking about what you've said even though her expression is very unreadable.

"Very well." She withdraws her axe gently. "That is a response of an intellectual." The orc walks around you and picks up the last of her things. "I will see what they have to say before I pass judgment on them."

Atriox looks at her with a sly smile

"Now answer me this Kora. As the person that they defected to.........what should I do should you try and harm them ? Food for thought. Now let's get to it. The sooner this all done the sooner we can relax."

Atrioxs opens the door and goes downstairs to look for his cleaned gear.

Her eyes flash a little dangerously, but she surprisingly.... bites her tongue. You leaving so suddenly likely helped mitigate any additional arguments. Following after you, she takes in more of the patrons downstairs and makes them rather uncomfortable.

You turn a corner and see a dwarven woman heading by with a basket full of laundered gear. She smiles warmly at you. "Why hello young master! I have your things here on top, I was just about to deliver them." Handing them over, she raises her eyebrows a bit at Kora. She smiles again though and gives you a wink.

Atriox chuckles at the dwarven lass as he watches her walk away. As he puts on his gear he looks at Kora

"I have no idea what her name is but from what I've seen shes a excellent employee. She's always so kind......among other things and seems to truly enjoy her job. That always makes things easier."

He finishes with his gear and stretches making sure everything is on good

"Ahhhh that's more like it. Now time to go see Cere."

She eyes the dwarf and nods. You catch her watching you carefully, rather quiet and observant again. "Sounds good. Lead the way. I'll let you do the talking."

You do notice the business is rather slow today, and you have several servers missing. You're not quite sure what's up but you have other things to attend to at this time.

You both head out into the sunlit morning. The brightness stings and everything glitters with an aura of the supernatural senses. You head down the road toward the town hall, hoping to find Cere there today.

Atriox eyes Kora hoping he didn't upset her to much. He wishes no discord between them.......they walk into the town hall quietly

A guard stops you at the door, a fellow with yellow hair and a tall spear. "Hello, Atriox." He nods his head at you, obviously aware of your name even though you aren't sure you know him yet. He then looks the orc up and down. "What can we uh, help you with? Are you here to meet with the mayor?"

Atriox nods giving the man a reassuring smile and patting him on the shoulder

"Indeed good sir. I will be leaving soon enough and I want to make sure the future of beloved Dragonshore is well in hand."

Atriox looks at Kora then back at the guard

"This is The Bonebreaker. She is my er.....personal bodyguard sir."

He gives her a strange look. "Yes... I see." She just stares at him, unblinking. It's rather unnerving. The guard shutters a little with frazzled nerves. "A-Alright, go on ahead. Cere is in his office."

Atriox waits till there a bit past the guard and then laughs while he looks at Kora

"I don't know if that will ever get old. You didn't even have to say anything. I'm surprised he didn't pass out right there"

Dorokor smirks. "Yeah, I seem to have that affect on people."

You head into Cere's office with a swift knock and see him milling over files on his desk. He looks up tat the happy diversion. "Oh, hello Prince! How are you fairing today? Well, I hope? You look... tired." He hesitates, seeing Kora.

Atriox goes over to shake Ceres hand smiling.

"Tired you say freind ? I would say that's warranted after all we've been through recently no ? Indeed shame on you mister Mayor for looking so good today !"
(Atriox says this all with a smile and his tone light)

"Now Cere we have business to discuss. I think I shall be leaving in a few weeks for my home. I think its finally time to go back. Why I truthfully dont know but I just cant shake this feeling..........but when I leave I will keep you to your promise and after all I think I've earned it. Doubly. As a good start I want to help Dragonshore grow tremendously in my absence. I'm willing to help fund the city's growth greatly. I have a few ideas but I wanted to see if you had any ideas on what might help this city grow ?"

"Certainly, dear friend! An alliance to span the ages.... I am more than keen on keeping my promise as well." He leans back in his chair, trying to focus on just you. Dorokor leans against the wall, avoiding eye contact with the dwarf and taking in the surroundings.

"As for ways to make the city grow... Damn if this fight didn't show me that we need a proper wall. As much trouble as we've had with the kobolds in the past, I think there has been some... Healing, kindled in the battle. They provided a very safe perimeter for the border of Dragonshore. And those traps... Very clever. Very clever."

He folds his arms, glancing out the window at the harbor. "I wouldn't mind more of a sea defense either, someday. We have a small lighthouse and that's really all right now. Also want to provide more exports. It's a fantastic stop for merchants but..."

Atriox listens to what the mayor says intently taking in every word. After Cere is done Atriox strokes his chin

"I see sir. We need Dragonshore to prosper first. Theres no sense in building a wall till it has grown but for now you will have my army here watching you. And knowing the Kobolds there numbers will double at least what they were before the fight. They could also build some defensive positions. We need to focus on the Economy. There are mines in the hills are there not ? Dragonshore also has a lot of Historical value. Which reminds me I need to go see Vince later.........anyway back to my point. I've discovered much about Dragonshore in my brief time here. About how the town came by its name, about the dragon Pyrlanth and his clearing in the forest where his remains are. Dragonshore could become a hot spot for all dragon kind. A pilgrimage of sorts. I also Have an elven temple that is being excavated as we speak. I have many plans for it, one of which being to use the healing waters there as a source of small income possible and just a place of healing, a place of history, maybe a place to host games between kobolds and humans for fun ? I dont know yet but I'm sure we can get creative Lord Cere Bronzebottle."

Atriox gives him a cheeky smile then continues

"I have a project or two that I want built while I'm gone. The first is a Mercenary Lodge. A good sized one as well. I'm sure my boy's company will grow while I'm gone and they should have a place to rest there head at night. Call home. They've.........they've earned it Cere. I also plan on assimilating the left over Orcs into the company. They need to earn there place just like the kobolds have. With Koras help hopefully that won't be to hard of a feat. Trust me my freind, the orcs will redeem themselves but we also cant hold to much of a grudge. They were simply mercenaries being honorable and keeping they're word. One last thing the hall will need a bust of its fallen brother Nathaniel with some words of him on it. I'm sure my boys will be happy to assist in that."

(Persuasion 24 charisma 21)

@Aubrey Burmaster Cere listens intently, quite interested in what you have to say. You can tell the dwarf respects you much more now than when you first met. He strokes his beard as he thinks.

"You make a fair point. A wall now might be restrictive later for the growth of Dragonshore. The mine...yes... It used to be a bigger draw years ago. Perhaps there is some life left in it. As well as dragons and elves... That's an idea."

He stands, pacing and stroking his beard more. "I like these. Quite a lot. Hopefully we can get some more revenue to start a few projects to get the stream rolling. I like how you think."

"As for the lodge, fantastic idea. We've needed another larger barracks anyway. A lodge sounds like a good plan. I'd gladly memorialize those who died defending the city against--"

He pauses awkwardly, looking at Dorokor. You know you made a fair point regarding her and her men, but you have brought the leader of the opposing troops before him... It's a delicate situation.

"Ahem... Anyway... Yes perhaps we can work out a deal."

Atriox nods his head in a slight bow

"That's all I ask for. The rifts can take time to mend but with the right patience anything is doable. Thank you Cere. As for funds just teller what you'll need and we will go from there. I leave in two weeks."

"Fantastic... Let me finalize some details and I'll make sure to get back to you before your departure." He reaches to shake your hand, clearing his throat from the nervousness of having Kora there. She seems nonplussed about it all, as long as her people are taken care of.

"Anything else you need from me, Atriox? From one adventurer to another?" Cere smiles, his beard twitching.

Atriox shakes Ceres hand thankful that this meeting went smoothly

" I think that will be all for now but thank you Cere. If something comes to mind I'll be sure to let you know. Come Kora and again thank my lord."

Kora follows you out with one last glance at the mayor before she leaves. Making our way back out into the bright sunlight, she squints her eyes and rolls her shoulders, trying to relax a bit.

"So you are planning to head back to your home in a few weeks then? Am I still going to receive my promised pay for guarding this strange little town? From Cere, or?" She raises an eyebrow. It doesn't sound accusatory, maybe a little cheeky in its playful seriousness.

Atriox chuckles and gives her a sideways glance

"Patience cheiftes. I always keep my word when I can, but do you think I just keep that amount of money on me ? No my money is somewhere safe. I hope I represented you and your people's case well ?"

They start heading for the edge of town. To go see the aftermath of the previous days events and to check on all they're people

"As for my plans in two weeks. Yes I plan on leaving. After this battle and all the plots that led up to it............it just.....I dont know just how to put it. It awakened something inside of me. A need to go home finally. Face my demons there and begin my dream in earnest. Since I'm paying you I expect you will be joining me."

She raises an eyebrow. "You represented us well... But where is home for you?"

The two of you walk to the edge of town. You see some of the aftermath from a distance; the broken trusses and bloodied stakes that kept the undead from reaching the citizens in Dragonshore. The ground is rutted and damp from the rain and blood after the battle, but the bodies have all been taking care of... A graveyard has been errected nearby, north of the city just a little ways.

A few kobolds still guard the area. Darr is here, his armor off his torso while he lets a gash on his back breathe. It's healing as well as it can but he looks a bit grumpy nonetheless.

Atriox walks torwards Darr but answers Kora without looking at her

"The heart of my kingdom is an island continent North West of the Komodori desert called Arkhosia. My home is on the mountain range in the center of that. It's called Skyhold."

He walks up to Darr and gives him a friendly greeting and asks how he's doing

"You mentioned Skyhold before... I was not familiar with it. On Arkhosia, you say?" Dorokor seems contemplative.

Darr looks up at Atriox and responds in draconic. "Hello boss. Good day isn't it? Little bright, but..." he rubs his eyes, the light irritating them.

"Soldiers are good. Smaller groups of troops making rotations right now. Healing up... Went back to the temple but the fountain was busy. Waiting for it to fill better again..."

He glances at Kora but ignores her otherwise. "Tak uh... Expressed his liking of my scar. Thought it was a story. Guess not so bad. I can kick all the other kobold's asses, not like I care." He looks a little thoughtful as if it bothers him but he's trying to not let it.

Atriox nods his head

"There is nothing shameful about scars unless they are from a shameful act Darr. That is something the Kobolds will learn as long as I'm in charge. I'm glad you are doing good though you fought well. Now where are Tak and Vele along with what's left of the orcs as well ?"

Kora studies the kobold intently, then looks away as well. She adjusts her weapon strapped to her side. You can sense something strange... Looking at the scar again it appears to be made by an... oh. An axe. Darr sucks at his teeth and makes a funny clicking noise with his tongue at your comments.

"They are all at the temple," he says as he returns to carving a spear in his hands. It looks like a new one, and you surmise his old one was broken during the battle. "Tak took them there. Well, kind of." He scratches his chin, another side glance flashing at Dorokor. "The big one, Gog? They fought alongside us yes, and took the other orcs prisoner, yes... but they were looking for her, or you." He gestures with his head at you both.

"Tak said you would lead them somewhere safe. Didn't trust leaving them here with the humans after the fight, but realized what you needed... Kobolds weren't super happy about it though, half of our side were slaughtered." He carves off another thick piece of wood with a bit more force than necessary. "Orcs weren't happy either. Bunch of heavy skins... wanted the dragonborn. Not us. We're not worth their time. But... He agreed to a duel." Darr tilts his head, looking at the spear's length to check it for balance. "Tak said he could take a hit from the big one. And said he could land a hit... He did both. So the orcs and Gog followed. You'll find him all at the temple."

Atriox growls in frustration. Of course theirs tension between the two armies, he should've guessed as much.

"Thank you Darr. I appreciate everything you have done. We will head that way immediately to smooth things over. Make sure to take care of your wound. We need you."

He nods, giving you a careful stare. He rolls his shoulders a little stretching the healing tissue. He seems kind of moved by you saying that and isn't sure how to respond at first. He pauses.

"Thanks. I will."

He tilts his head a little as he stares, then goes back to carving his spear. He seems more focused and honed in his work. You walk toward the forest with Kora in tow, and once among the treeline she sighs in relief.

"Finally... some shelter from that blasted sunlight. After last night we're safe, but it doesn't make the brightness pleasant..." She gives Atriox a rough nudge in the side as she walks closer to him. She chuckles a little with a sultry, tough air, the memory of the evening seemingly enjoyable to her as much as it was for you.

Wound catches the red light of the trees and glows against Kora's hip. Her eyes seem to match the same glowing light. "I will say this place is one of the more pleasing I've visited... I preferred this area over the mines to be honest."

Atriox thinks it over not surprised. The area is quite beautiful. He trys to talk with an even voice and be neutral

"So you were at the mines at some point then. We received information that you were there but then you showed your hands in the woods that day. I surmised that you'd actually snuck your way to the other side of Dragonshore. I was impressed by the way for your ability to sneak all the way by us with that large of a force."

Dorokor gets a smug smile. "Yes... we had a few individuals working in that mine. It kept up the charade." She looks around through the trees, watching for movement. "We moved to White Birch months ago."

Her eyes glow red at the sight of a deer in the distance. Her teeth extend a little, but she continues to follow after you instead of chasing the deer. It bounds away into the trees.

Atriox muls that over.

"Yes very impressive and very clever. Though I shouldn't be surprised knowing you."

Atriox continues walking for awhile then thinks of something

"You say you had a few people actually there ? Did they find anything? As you heard earlier were looking for ways to jump start the town's growth. One of the ideas was the mine"

She seems to ponder this for a few minutes as you walk. "We haven't had much need of the mine in terms of... its original use. It seems to have been excavated quite a bit already. However there did appear to be a few veins further in. Perhaps there's a little life blood still left in it that hasn't been sucked out."

The corners of her mouth twitch in jest, her teeth protruding a little more. "Perhaps there are other veins in the mountain. Or some more in White Birch... definitely land aplenty there."

Atriox just nods at the information in affirmative

"Thank you for your help Kora. Its appreciated"

She shrugs. "Whatever I guess. I'm not really interested in this town as much as the necromancers were. I could care less. But good for you if you can help these cattle here."

You continue your walk. The trail is beaten down with many kobold feet and wagon tracks from carts coming from the north. The roads are safer now, although still making travelers uneasy. There is definitely potential here... you can feel it. This whole area is brimming with history after all.

Atriox just pretends to not hear her and keeps walking torwards the temple

You continue walking through the forest, past the dragon bones and the grove and through the thicker parts of the Tanglewood. A birdsong fills the air that you haven't heard before. It is sweet and melodic. You remember the elven specter who lives near here in her little house.

Atriox sighs and holds his hand up

"Theres someone I suppose we should visit before I leave. I warn you......she's an interesting being."

Atriox heads torwards the cabin

The cabin door is open and it is empty inside. The birdsong continues in the trees around you, leaves gently falling from the branches. You hear the music from behind the house. Heading around to the other side you see the ghostly being sitting--hovering really--above the ground. Around her is a circle of wildflowers and firebloom blossoms. She seems to be meditating, her aura wispy and thin. She's more faint than you've ever seen her, and in the weak sunlight filtering through the trees she is almost invisible at times.

Dorokor hangs out near the front, leaving you to your business. She wonders in and among the trees, hunting. Waiting.

Atriox kneels near the nearly departed elf

"Hello wise one, I came to visit you one last time before I depart for some time."

Krysvyre smiles serenely. You remember her terribly scarred face and hands when you first met her... Horribly painful burns covered most of her body.

She looks so different now. It's as if those injuries are fading away. Reverting as she melts into the ethereals.

Her white eyes turn to gaze into yours. She's younger. More gentle looking. A beautifully angelic and fair elven maiden. It almost breaks your heart with how peaceful she appears now.

"Hello brave one." Her voice is delicate. "I imagine you depart to heal other lands like my own... Other people like myself." The words sound of the wind around you, but you can hear them like a clear bell in your mind. She speaks to you telepathically and her voice is mystically melodic.

"I wish you luck in all your journeying, Atriox... The Dragon hearted. The Unbroken... the Unbreakable. The Gentle. Prince and future Dragon King over all Skyhold... master of the Crimson Guard and the Fell Lands... Sire of... Well..." her eyes twinkle mischievously. You aren't sure what she means by most of it.

Krysvyre floats in place, turning to face you. Her body shimmers in and out of sight. "I myself am also soon to depart... I was hoping to see you all again. To thank you. You have all done so much. Healed so many... Please tell the others goodbye for me." She seems to grow younger before your eyes, a teenager now perhaps. Her hair, now no longer destroyed and wispy but full like molten silver flows over her shoulders and down to her ankles.

Atriox looks shocked by her words, the mysterious titles she claims he'll have, what he will sire.......it's all strange but he trys to get himself together and ignore it all for now

"I will tell them my lady. I'm sure they will be sad they missed you. I will miss your calming nature and wisdom. This grove will miss you. But you've done more than enough. It's time for you to soar amongst the clouds with the spirit of Pyrlanth. I envy you a little."

She floats closer. "I feel his presence nearby. We will both eagerly watch your journey from the courts of Bahamut. His scales have tipped further toward goodness."

Now looking about 10 years old Krysvyre gives a gentle touch, taking Atriox's hand in hers. It feels like a cool stream on a spring evening.

"May I ask one final favor if you, Atriox?"

Atriox nods his head

"Of course my lady you just need to ask it"

"Can you be here with me when I depart? I am ready... I've been ready."

She pauses, the words tremoring slightly in your mind. "But I'm... Still a little scared. And I've been alone so long. May I?"

Atriox puts his free hand ontop of hers and smiles at her

"Of course. You are ready and you are not alone. It is time. I will be greatly honored to be here with you in your last moments."

She closes her eyes and there is an overwhelming feeling of peace around you both. Her hand fades. She drifts into you as if cradled against your chest. A small fey child.

"Until we meet again across the ethereal seas... May Pyrlanth light every golden horizon that graces your princely brow."

She disappears in a haze of glittering light. A thrum resonates deep within your heart.

Atriox lingers in that spot for a moment. He's a little sad but more happy. This is one of the few rare happy goodbyes Atriox thinks he will ever have. Finally with a sigh he gets up and heads back to Kora

You round the front of the cottage. As you look at it you do a double-take. It is surprisingly.... old. The inside and outside is covered with fine moss and vine, fully erupted into flowers. Birds flutter among the missing shingles of the rooftop, nesting in their crevices. It's as if it has been dilapidated for over a century. There is no sign of any individuals having lived in it recently, although you have been inside perhaps just a week ago...

Dorokor walks out from the treeline, having been leaning against one of the gnarled trunks waiting for you. A rabbit hangs limp in one of her hands, her lips and teeth red with its blood.

"You seem fond of the unnatural... or supernatural, I should say." She says it very plainly, not meaning anything else by it than an observation. "Ready to go? Or do you have anywhere else to stop?"

"I have a fond for anything out of the ordinary. Unique people bring unique abilities to the table. Such as yourself Bonebreaker. I like to think out of the box. But yes I'm done here. Let's go"

Dorokor shrugs. "Probably the first time I've been called something like that. Lead the way."

She follows after and you make your way toward the temple. It's another hour or so before you get there but you can see the tell tale signs of the kobold's handiwork as you approach. Not much has been done at the base since the battle, all the focus having gone into training and digging trenches. The energy here feels much different now... fewer blues move about working and resting. You see many groups of kobolds sheltered under the shade of the trees, sleeping and recovering from their wounds. Several work to divide up a carcass of a large boar, ripping off chunks and tossing them into a pile for others to pick from. It's rather kind in a very vicious sort of way.

One stands up from the work, wiping blood from his face after having crawled into the guts of the beast. Without the gore on him you can tell by the green scales and demeanor that it is Tak. He spots you at that moment and freezes, a little uncertain. He jerks his head in a friendly hello sort of way. Excusing himself from the task he crawls up into a barrel of water and dunks himself in. He flounders for a moment trying to rinse off the blood and climb back out. He shakes off the excess water by the time you are near him.

As Atriox approaches Tak he gets a concerned look on his face. He covers the last little bit of ground and kneels down to Tak looking him in the eye

"Hello brother, I'm sorry I'm only now just getting here. Is everything alright ? You gave me an odd look."

Now that he is cleaned off you can see Tak's unscarred eye is black and blue, the scales bruised badly. He gives a cheeky grin and you notice a few teeth knocked loose. "Y-yeah. Things okay. Doing best to take care of things here. Trying not let morale get too low. Taking break from digging... mostly." He scratches his cheek. He notices Kora hanging back a bit and he clears his throat. "Orcs set up small camp outside forest. They up on hill." He points up above you to the cliffs above the temple.

Atriox nods and puts a hand on Taks shoulder feeling instant relief that his brother is ok.

"We will gather the men, as many as we can and I will help with what I can regarding the moral brother. Everything will be ok. Thank you Tak for holding them all together. I'm proud of you. So very proud, and how you fought mid battle......I was honored to fight along such a powerful warrior of the Kobolds."

Atriox takes a breath and gets a worried look

"Wheres Vele........how is she Tak ?"

Tak looks touched at the hand on his shoulder and the kind words. You can tell he is struggling to handle the emotions he's feeling and how to express them properly. "Vele... she... awake." He picks the words out carefully. He looks a bit downcast.

"She in the temple. She spunky. Kind of... angry. Tak giving her space." He looks at the ground a little concerned. "Hoping to talk her into going to ocean again with the others. You wish to see her?"

Atriox stands up and nods his head with a grunt

"I would. Shes important to and I'd like to personally go check up on her. Spread the word that I will be saying some words brother."

Atriox looks to Kora

"Do you wish to stay with me or go up and address some of your mens......needs or questions ? If you choose to go up there I expect to find everybody alive when I join you after the speech Kora."

Her eyes flash. "I'll respect that... For now. I have other plans for them that I need them alive for." She turns on her heel and stalks off to where Tak indicated her troops were.

Tak watches her leave and rubs his arm. "Take you to Vele. She... May want to speak with you. Tak don't know." With a sigh he leads you toward the temple and inside.

You head downstairs and come to a makeshift door. It's against one of the walls that didn't have a room before. You hear a cursing and scratching from inside.

Atriox hears the cursing and chuckles as he knocks on the door

You hear the scuffling stop and there's an awkward silence. A few kobolds that are guarding the treasury nearby stop to stare, glance at one another, then duck into the room their guarding nervously. Tak looks like he's holding his breath.

"LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE! STOP PESTERING ME! TAK IF THAT IS YOU I SWEAR ON GAKNULAK'S TAIL THAT I'M GOING TO STRANGLE YOU!"

Tak stiffens like a board. You can see the uncertainty in his eyes at whether she is bluffing or not. He purposefully avoids eye contact with you and coughs, leaning slightly away.

Atriox slightly chuckles at Taks reaction but will not have Vele behaving like this. He let's out a loud string of growls. To loud to be a kobold he thinks she should know who it is and open the damn door

There's another stint of awkward silence. You can almost feel the embarrassment and horror leaking from the room. Tak still stands frozen to the spot, holding his breath. Eventually her words come through the closed door, almost a trembling squeak. There is a very apparent meekness and careful consideration in her voice.

"A-Apologies, Great One. I... I did not mean you any dishonor. I have not been feeling well and have been pestered mercilessly. I was not aware you were gracing the temple with your presence today... I beg of your pardons."

Atriox knocks again growling slightly as there's still a door in his face

"Let me in Vele. If this is about your injuries there is nothing to be ashamed of ! You fought bravely as one of the leaders of your kind."

There is a scrambling noise of claws on the floor, then a crash as something is knocked over. A muffled stream of curses ensues before you hear scrambling again. A scraping can be heard against the door as something is moved away from it, and then it cracks open. Tak steps back behind you a pace, trying to stay out of sight of Vele. He doesn't seem keen on being addressed or coming in with you.

You see that it is rather dark and musty inside, a large pile of dirt and rock having been excavated from the walls and ceiling already. It's perhaps 5 feet high and you have to duck to enter, but the walls have been carved away a good deal. Some tools and loose items have been scattered around to help in the digging process, or just to keep her busy tinkering--you're not sure which.

Eyes adjusting to the dim light, they retain their slightly vampiric glow as you spot the small form of Vele. She's wrapped in a cloak, every inch of her coated with fine dust from her project. It's hooded and trails on the floor behind her a little, perhaps somewhat overly large.

You see her fiddle with the corner of the cloak a little, like how she used to fiddle with her tail. She just seems to want to keep her hands busy. "I am sorry Atriox, I honestly didn't know it was you. And I'm not ashamed." A hint of heated emotion comes into her voice, tinged with lies, "I just... wanted to focus. Everyone else is being lazy and I wanted to show what hard work meant! I'll make this room grand. I like staying busy. I..." She trails off, struggling to continue. You can almost hear the blood pounding in her ears, and aren't sure what to do with the faint hunger that invokes. It makes her sound exhausted and fevered.

Atriox smiles at her enthusiasm although he knows her wanting to work is because she's dealing with a lot of emotional issues right now

"Vele I came to check on you. I felt bad I couldn't sooner. I was very worried when I saw how injured you were. Are you recovering well ? Come now dont be shy. Show me."

"I'm recovering fine..." She pulls her cloak around her more. You can tell she's being extremely self conscious. "You are a busy leader with many responsibilities, you don't have to stress about coming to see me. There are more important things to worry about."

Atriox grunts in frustration blowing steam out his snout

"Vele ! Stop being this way. There is nothing you need hide from me. EVER ! You understand ? Whatever marks your wounds left are not a bad thing. They're a story of all the heroic things you've done !"

She winces visibly, realizing she made you angry. She struggles to keep from crying and clenches her claws tightly. Her voice is thin when she responds again. "Yes, Atriox. I understand."

Going to the door carefully she shuts it, the dim light fading to darkness. You can see as she moves there's a strange gait to her step. She sort of stumbles across and catches herself on the handle. It's almost like she's drunk, but something about her voice says she's not. Turning around with her back to the door she sighs. She moves awkwardly to a blanket in the corner and pulls out a jar of buzzing lights--lightning bugs--their dim glow fills the room with a shifting aura of blueish white. She stares at them for a moment before setting it down.

"Listen, I know they're stories. And I'm lucky, they'll heal in time. I just... it's..." She fiddles with her cloak and lets it fall back. Vele looks even more shy than before. Her scales are pockmarked with scarring but just along the surface. It's a very dull speckling of the acid from one of her own weapons. It's definitely not as deep or disfiguring as Tak's scar is.

The kobold awkwardly moves forward, her bandaged tail showing. It's perhaps 1/4th the length it should be, a short nub at the base of her spine. She struggles with the urge to hide it, sheepishly saying, "It makes it hard to walk. The balance throws me off.... But it will grow back eventually. Hopefully."

You feel like there is more to it than that but she grabs the cloak and shrugs it over her shoulders again. She keeps her eyes averted. "I'm just trying to keep myself busy while I heal and I keep getting pestered by the others."

Atriox kneels down infront of her with a sad smile

"Dear one. I understand wanting to throw yourself into your work. But you must know when to take a break or you will end up worsening your work. It's not just the body that needs a break but the mind as well little Vele. Nobody is being lazy out there. They simply need time to heal and recover from the emotional and physical loss that the battle took. And Tak and the others pester you because they care about you. I think especially Tak,though he may not admit it. You are a powerful and brilliant example of your kind Vele. I saw potential in you instantly. And I think so did Tak. You two are two sides of the same coin. This Army cant function without both of you at its head. I know you want to make me proud and your people proud. We all are Vele. Now it's time to rejoin your people and stop hiding under that cloak. You and Tak next to me for everybody to see. As family."
(Persuasion 17)

"And your burns aren't that bad little one. The tail should grow back thankfully. You wont be struggling to remain balanced forever."

Vele finally looks up. Her eyes spill over with tears and she nods. Your words touched her and although she's still shy, she looks more encouraged than before. "A-alright. Thank you, Atriox. I will. I'll get cleaned up and meet you in just a minute. I'll do my best to make you proud."

Atriox gets up and walks to the door where he stops and looks at her

"Theres no need to try. You always do Vele."

Atriox walls out heading for the front of the temple

It's been a little while since you've gone inside, and the sunlight is a bit strong for your eyes now that you're back. You see many of the kobolds have been roused and are gathering around the remains of the boar. Tak sits nearby on a rock, bathing in the warm sun. Although it is hard for him to stand the light too, you know he enjoys it.

Dorokor appears from the far ridge, coming down the path with a group of orcs. There are two different groups behind her--those who had deferred to you and left her employ, and those who fought against you and your troops and killed many of them. A sour, almost bitter note fills the air.

You can see there is a hazy thrall-like glow in some of the orc's eyes--mostly the ones who deferred to you. It is as if they're under a charm. Gogron is the only exception, a slashing set of claw marks deep on his face. They look like they were made from a kobold and you assume Tak as the one who landed them.

Vele pads up behind you a few minutes later. You hear the almost drunken footfalls as she ends up by your side. She's wearing some of her nicer gear but no cloak. There is a definite nervousness being out in the open again like this.

Vele looks up at you for a brief moment before looking back down sheepishly. You can tell she's nervously wanting to fiddle with her tail but is unable to do so, making her more self conscious. Several kobolds nearby look at her and whisper quietly and she glares in their direction. You can hear a light, angry whistle faintly from her mouth.

Tak spots you both together. He seems to hesitate for just a moment before jumping down from the rock and moving forward. Vele notices him and sets a firm face. Tak tries to not stare or worry over her and approaches Atriox instead.

"Anything else I can do to help, brother?"

Atriox looks at him and nods

"You can come stand by me brother as I address our people. Is everybody that could possibly make it here ?"

Tak glances over his shoulder at the gathered crowd. It's noticeably smaller than ever. He clears his throat a little and nods. "Y-yes. Tak think so. We have few stationed at the other camp, and patrol just returned from town. This as many as we have here now."

Atriox looks out at his men. He spends a minute in silence just looking out at them.Looking at many of them he sees the sadness and desperation in there eyes from loosing so many comrades. He knows what they want to hear, and thanks Io that this once at least he can give his men that news without it being a lie.

After a few minutes of silence Atriox speaks in precise Draconic, trying to make sure his voice comes off as strong but not overly authoritative. His men need comforting not shouted at.

"Thank you all for taking the time to listen to what I have to say. I know your busy recovering and relaxing after the battle. The battle is exactly what I wanted to address today. You all........each and every one of you fought bravely and to the last, not surrendering once ! I know that these are what feel like dark days but look ahead at the future. Not long ago you were lead by a crazed dragon named Tyranus, who cared nothing for you. You were simply fodder to do her will. Slaves to fuel her own greed. During that time the town of Dragonshore and the surrounding are hated your kind. They spit on your names. But now............now they are eternally grateful ! Because of your sacrifice, the sacrifice of your brothers, freinds, family's there will always be a future here for kobolds of all kinds ! Because of you all. I know that may not seem like a comfort at this moment but think about it. In the not far off future Dragonshore will grow vastly, my kingdom across the sea will grow, my home Skyhold will need rebuilt anew and then it to will grow. All these places are opportunities for kobolds to live, grow, live fulfilling lives. You will not be outsiders any longer ! Your kids will run and play with everyone else's as equals ! You want to open up a shop ? Great you want to be mercenaries? Great. Blacksmiths, artisans, creators, inventors you name it ! You can do it ! No more living like outcasts and hiding ! No more being hated ! Because all of your sacrifices you and your families have a brighter future. And as a thank you Myself, and your two chiefs Tak and Vele would like to know how we can properly honor you and your fallen. What can we do to make sure your family and comrades are never forgotten? On top of that the next two weeks are yours to enjoy yourselves. Do as you wish. Go to town and explore, go swimming, explore the forest, whatever. You've all earned downtime. I am immensely proud to call you all my troops, the best army any commander could ever wish for. Our fight is not over but we have time. Time to replenish what was lost and train better. We will make those who are gone now proud. I swear it !"

(Charisma 16 Perception 16 Persuasion 25)

Atriox raises a clawed hand in the air and roars in victory

The kobolds cheer in unison, invigorated by the rousing speech. Many look curious or surprised, for although they were downhearted they weren't used to honoring their fallen in such a way as was being described. They were used to death and loss, especially in the unforgiving mountains of the north. Being treated so respectfully by a leader was off-putting but not unwelcome.

Vele began to forget her embarrassment the longer your speech carried on. She watched you closely, and could feel your honesty behind your words. They were not shallow or flippantly given, but heart-felt. You really did care about them, and meant what you said. At the end of the speech she felt warm with pride at her people, at being part of this new tribe, at being called a chief--despite what she'd been before, or what the others might see her as.

Tak likewise watches you, and watches how the crowd reacts. He can see how you command their respect. Mentally he notes your mannerisms, your power; how it is tinged with gentleness... And how that gentleness is not weakness. He's surprised at how the others respond to his chiefdom, and how they respond to this sudden freedom given to them. An excitement ripples through the crowd, like a cool rain of relief on a hot summer day.

Bonebreaker Dorokor looks over the chittering and yipping dragonkin, one eyebrow raised. Her tusks protrude a little further in a slight smirk. "Impressive," she mutters. "Commanding such a rabble with that kind of respect." As surprised as she is there is a hint of discontent in her eyes. She can feel the men behind her shifting a little on their feet. The orcs with her, both those who defected and those who fought against these lizards, watch her and Atriox closely. They can sense the power struggle and it makes an unease run up her spine. At least those defectors are whipped and brow beaten... quite aware that they are lucky their heads are not upon pikes tonight.

The roar of the kobolds subsides and they stomp their feet in a thunderous excitement. Tails slap the ground and they look eager for what is to come.

Atriox waves at his men and smiles looking pleased. He's very relieved that some of the tension has been relieved but that reminds him. He looks over at Kora and the orcs and squints his eyes a little when he sees the ones that joined him and they're condition

He looks to Tak and Vele

"I think you two can handle this from here. After all your both the chiefs. I need to take care of something else sadly"

Atriox grunts and waves Dorokor and the Orcs torwards the temple as he enters it to go sit and wait in his makeshift throne

Tak and Vele nod and walk toward the other kobolds. Those who sneer at Vele get a glare or a hiss from Tak, one even receiving a smack on the top of the head. They look like they want to fight him over it but think better of it, having Atriox there watching. Grumbling they scoot away at the bidding of their chiefs. A group seems keen on going to the ocean for a swim, and another keen on the temple to return back to the mountain for some time. A good portion skitter off into the basement of the temple, yipping like excited dogs.

Dorokor stiffens a bit. Following in after you, she leads her tribe and greets you at your throne in the main hall. Some of the orcs leer at the healing fountain in curiosity, others eye the kobolds tumbling about. Kora grunts.

"Fine little temple you're fixing for yourself here, Atriox," she says, her eyes bright and calculating. She chooses her words carefully, and says them loud enough all of her men can hear her. "I am glad we were able to make a mutual agreement regarding the future of our clans. An alliance is sometimes an important thing among equally strong warriors, is it not? For the betterment of both sides. It breeds protection, power, and pride."

Atrioxs eyes flash red at her words. He's furious at Koras for what she's attempting here. While he thinks over his options he clacks his talons on the arms of the chairs, mulling over every option he has, which being honest isn't very many

Finally he grunts and speaks

"I suppose your right Bonebreaker.........an alliance as you put it......is in all our best interests. We can only hope to gain from this friendship with your tribe. But only if it can prove to be honorable. Only if your people Dorokor can prove to me that they are not just savages, for there is a difference between loving a good fight as I'm sure your men do, and being a savage, mindless brute. Because those are not fit to live amongst the society we are building. Those types of creatures must be put down instantly and without mercy as I'm sure you agree cheiftes. Those who break this accord will be punished in the most severe of ways."

Atriox let's a little steel get In his voice making sure Kora gets the message

"Now I suggest you all go back to your camp and await orders for there will be orders. Cheiftes you stay........"

Her lips purse tightly. She straightens her back, growling at her men to signal them it is alright to go. Gogron grunts and with the wave of an arm, leads the fighters out of the temple and into the afternoon sunlight outside. They make their way back up the hill over the ridge.

Kora maintains a stony gaze with Atriox, unblinking.

Once they are alone she responds with a rather cold voice, "I hope you weren't intending to make it sound like you were calling me a mindless brute there. "

Atriox grunts and responds in a equally cold voice

"No not you personally, but rather some of your men. So were equals now making an alliance is that it ? That's very interesting Kora seeing as that's what I wanted in the first place. A friendship built off of mutual respect, but you didn't want that. You wanted to be a hired mercenary, you wanted money. So which is it Kora ? Free allie or paid Merc. Because if it's the later I hope your clear on who's in charge especially since what I'm doing in the first place by sparing you and your men is generous! I could have easily had you all killed ! The town and my kobolds alike would have loved the spectacle of seeing you all punished ! But that's not how I work. I would love for us to work together........"

Atrioxs eyes flash and he uses his strength from feeding recently to propel himself forward out of his seat and puts himself right behind her quicker than a blink of an eye. He puts a hand on one of her shoulders and whispers

"But........I will NOT.......be undermined. Especially in my own territory. Your lucky I respect our.......partnership to play your little game infront of the others."

Her eyes are steely, facing forward like a statue as she takes in your words. She's appears mildly surprised at your candor. Your abilities.

"Little game indeed..." Kora's lips curl in irritation, but not necessarily at you. "Unfortunately I've found myself in a predicament today. I realized the need to provide income for my men... But also show I am still in charge over them."

She glances at your hand on her shoulder. "Mercenaries are one thing, and they respect that. We have done jobs before. But this feels... different. They know that. And orc or no, you have made them question my leadership. Perhaps unintentionally."

Her eyes meet yours and they narrow. "I was not intending to undermine you. I am also pleasantly surprised at your power as a fledgling." Kora's voice has a note of ice like she is not. "And how you decide to intimidate your sire." She looks like she is thinking something else, but bites her tongue. You hear her say the closest thing to a thank you that you've heard.

"You playing the game is... Appreciated. As is your waiting until we are alone to discuss this."

Atriox grunts when she finishes and begins pacing around the room and her. Thinking over her response he decides he is not moved. She understands that this is more than some mercs taking a job and yet she still wants his resources and protection without him having authority over her.......

"That is quite the conundrum you have yourself there Kora. You want to remain in control, to decide what the future of your clan and yet you have no money to fund them and on your own, you have no protection from the angry locals. I'm just merely pointing out facts."

Atrioxs grunts again and goes to sit back in his throne

"You just displayed a show of power infront of me. My choices are to either accept it and get over it or well dont. I'll pretend you didn't know exactly what you were doing so we can just move on from this. I dont want to fight with you too. God forbid all my supposed freinds think I'm horrible."

Atriox let's out a sigh

"As for my strength........... are you upset Bonebreaker?"

There's a bit of momentary confusion on her face. She almost looks startled at all the information she just received. Her eyes narrow again but not in anger. Somehow she seems empathetic. In her own rough, cold, intense, Bonebreaker sort of way.

"No." Her eyes glow a bit. "I am not upset. It actually makes me happy to know my unintentional fledgling is so strong."

She walks over as unthreatenly as possible and leans on the side of the throne. She runs her hand along the edge of the stone. "Perhaps I'm a bit jealous though. To be candid. It took me time to grow into my new power."

She stares down at you from her perch, speaking more interestedly than accusatory.

"To be clear I'm also not used to friends. I haven't ever had that title. I'm not sure how to take it. But I didn't think it was a horrible reaction... Or that you're a horrible person. If I was in your place....... I would have cut off my head." She smirks, her fangs showing. "But... I hazarded a guess that you weren't quite like me."

Kora sighs, her nose twitching a little in irritation. "Believe me, I've tried to keep track of our funds. We are mostly self sustaining mercenaries. But this last.... Job... We had," she chews on the words as if rancid meat, "Took time and money, none of which we were compensated for in the end. Our contact left and the other died. I looked the fool to my men."

She leans forward, her elbow resting casually on one knee as she peers at you. Her intimidating demeanor is accented--softened perhaps--by a seductive glance. You know she's thinking of the previous night's foray.

"You intrigue me. But my men... They are--were my clan. My family. We are a hard brood." Her mouth tightens. "If we are to have our lives spared, we must provide loyalty. If we are to make money, we need to travel. To be hired. Not usually by nice people." Kora snorts in mild humor.

"I see where you're coming from though, Atriox. As a fellow leader I don't want to put you in a bind. Granted I've already done that once in that meat locker, but..." a smile teases the corners of the orc's mouth again and she pets your hair. "Politics are different. And difficult... I'll talk to my men. I promise I won't kill any. But I will protect myself."

She looks contemplative. "If you can make sure they're well cared for, monetarily..." she hesitates, turning away. "Forget my pay in the agreement. I can subsist in ways they cannot. Money isn't much my thing. I'll defer to you as our... Payer. Our boss. Does that help find equilibrium? At least for my men and their place with you?"

You can tell she is trying to smooth things over, but you're unsure of what your relationship together is at this point. She's basically offering her troops to you... For however you wish to treat them as long as they are not slaves. Although she hoped those troops would see you and her on equal footing, allies perhaps, given her speech...

Atriox sighs and feels a slight smile on his lips. She has disarmed and cooled him off almost completely. He puts a hand on her knee by his thrown

"I'm sorry Kora. If you come with me of course you'd worry about your men. I got overly protective of my power I suppose. An easy addition to pick up that. Power. But let me explain what I have in mind, I touched on it at the meeting but I'll go into more detail. So when I leave, you will be accompanying me so what to do with your men ? Well as I told Cere I want a giant merc. Lodge built. My 3 loyal mercenaries will head it up. Your orcs could work there. They'd be paid of course and I'll put some money torwards it. They will probably end up being hired to protect and patrol the town as it rebuilds and grows. Probably a long term contract with Dragonshore. They could even help with other things. Whatever really as long as it benefits Dragonshore and makes them look good. Hows that sound ? And you can still have your pay. You never know when you might find something you want while we travel."

A rare sort of expression graces her features. "That sounds more than fair." Kora lets her hand trail over your obsidian horns as she stands up.

"You are an interesting dragonborn." She smirks. "And an interesting leader. I'll go check on this camp of theirs again and speak with Gogron about my... Soon-to-be absence. Do you need anything else? Friend?"

She tests the word teasingly, finding the notion rather humorous.

Atriox let's out a laugh at her face as she tests the word.

"Very well Kora. I'll be here. I need to make sure some last details are in place before I leave."

The rest of the day passes in exuberance. You can hear the kobolds chittering happily, testing the waters of their newfound free time. The cool dim light from the temple feels nice, and you rest in your seat for quite a while... Especially after expending that burst of energy with Kora... the sun seems a little uncomfortably bright.

****

You wake the next morning. Many kobolds scamper back from down below where the portal leads home. You see a dozen or so females pass by at one point, frolicking with the males in excitement at seeing the warm forest and the ocean. The males pounce and play with them. Tak enters, a little irritation on his face. He watches them pass and shakes his head, mumbling something under his breath you can't quite catch.

"How sleep? You look... Ill? Need anything? Or anything done?" He eyes you carefully, studying your eyes and scales. The dry cracking over their surface makes him itchy just looking at them, and he can't help but scratch his own dull scales.

Atriox rubs his eyes a little and trys to act nonchalant about how we looks

"I'm fine brother how is everything ? The troops enjoying themselves? More importantly why aren't you enjoying yourself?"

He's taken aback a little. "Y-yes, they rather enjoying themselves. The ocean is popular, as is the river." He sniffs in agitation as a rather yippy female blue rushes by, snipping at the heels of Darr. The fighter has a clever smile on his face as he's chased outside.

"The fiesty, fecund egg layers they are..." he scratches at his scales again irritatedly, molting. He sounds weird saying a fancy word like that. Realizing it was out of character for him he mumbles in explanation, "Er.. That's what Vele said to Tak, anyway... It all seems silly to me. Tak enjoys other things."

Atriox looks at Tak blankly and then bursts out in laughter for a moment. Finally he's able to stop

"Oh i see.......Is that what has you so antsy. Well just ignore them brother. Everyone has there own way of......unwinding"

Atriox can't keep the smirk of his face

"So why dont you go do something fun ?"

"It's distasteful..." he hangs his head back, shoulders sagging in exasperation. More barking kobolds can be heard from down the hall and he wrinkles his nose in disgust at their... excessive unwinding.

He doesn't respond right away as if thinking. "Tak find something to do. Maybe... go beach and burrow in warm sand. Or..." His eyes looks lost. He doesn't seem to know and it frustrates him more. He clenches the hilt of his sword.

"What about you?" He says, trying to change the subject. "Where you going? Tak come along?" His green tail swishes in eagerness.

Atriox thinks it over for a moment. He hadn't really decided what to do with his day yet but now that he thinks about it.....he needs to go see Axemage. Those necklaces need made and theres other business that needs tending to

"Sure Tak you can come along. I'm just heading into town to take care of some business. We haven't gone for a walk together in awhile have we ? Well let's go then shall we."

Tak perks up almost immediately. He looks happier than he's been for some time and grabs his things. "Sounds good, let's go!"

The two of you walk the long way into town, taking a few hours to do so with a leisurely place through the forest. Tak is quiet most of the time, rather enjoying just being around you again. You and Alrik had a profound affect on the little kobold, and you can sense he's doing better than ever.
